Jameis Winston cements No. 1 status with combine coronation - NFL.com

Whereas Mariota confirmed his reputation as an outstanding athlete by registering a 4.52-second 40 time, Winston looked plodding by comparison -- and damaged his draft stock by a John Blutarsky-esque quotient of 0.0. He will be a classic pocket passer in the NFL, and he's considered far more pro-ready than Mariota, who operated almost exclusively out of the shotgun in a spread offense at Oregon.

With the quarterback-needy Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the clock, it's a virtual certainty that Winston will be the No. 1 overall draft pick come April 30. Unless they unearth some truly disturbing information between now and then, the Bucs are likely to embrace the former Florida State quarterback as the face of their franchise, largely because of his exceptionally high football IQ.

"The kid is great on the (grease) board, and he can sling the hell out the ball," said one general manager who has drafted a quarterback first overall. "I don't see how they can not take him."

Bucs taking FSU QB Jameis Winston with top pick is "virtual certainty,"

When I watched a little of the NFL network, I was amazed by his football IQ. All we hear about is his immaturity and stupid decisions. What I saw could potentially be a great NFL QB.

I don't think on the field was ever his issue. And his interview shows elite football knowledge. I don't think he will be able to answer all the off field stuff without simply keeping his nose clean. Therein lies the rub for a team getting ready to donate the first pick. Maybe a babysitter is just what he needs. Derrick Brooks will draw that assignment or so it seems.

From all accounts he is great at X's and O's and knows the game. He still had a lot of bonehead plays during the regular season that would leave you scratching your head. He was praised for his ability to lead his team in comebacks down the stretch, but half the reason they were in those predicaments was because of him.

He was a solid #1 coming in to the weekend, and he left as such. He is the #1 QB prospect above Mariotta, and it is not even close, even before the combine. He threw, ran and did whatever this weekend because he knew it didn't matter.

As I've been saying for about a year now. If you are looking for a QB to lead your team, Jameis has every single tool you are looking for in a franchise QB on the field. That being said you don't know what you are getting off the field. If he cleans it up, 5 years from now he will be a Top 5 QB in this league.

He is probably a lock and has all the tools and the football IQ needed. It is always a crapshoot determining if his problems off the field are immaturity or a behavior pattern to be addressed.

My biggest concern is he does throw picks more than he should and he holds the ball a little longer than the normal NFL QB. He will learn the hard way in the NFL on these things. Assuming the Bucs take him, he does not have a ton of play makers around him. It will take him a few years to develop, but he should be a good one if he stays clean off the field.

He's gonna have Doug Martin, Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. Talent would be better than average around him.

Evans, I will give you, he is a beast. Not certain VJ will be back and he is declining, Martin needs to stay on the field, but when healthy, he is very good. Not in top half of leaguse as a play making offense. They can build around him, though, in the future.

I'll wait and see on Winston. The more everybody raves about him, the more I get nervous about him. I would be concerned about taking him as I don't want a QB I feel like I have to baby sit. I agree with Cowherd when he says the two most important things about a QB are accuracy and maturity. His accuracy appears to be a positive. Maturity...not so much...although he can grow into that obviously. We will see.

He threw a ton of interceptions last year as well, which scares me a bit too...

With Winston it comes down to this. Do you trust Winston to be the face of an organization for 10-15 years? Because that is what you are hopefully investing in to when you draft a QB #1 .

That's the question. And my money says that Tampa Bay does.
