Mercer / Harrodsburg Consolidation

Featured Replies

but, the fact that "it will be tough finding games for these schools" shouldnt even be spoke of, let alone considered in the decision of the merger taking place for the 2006 season. :jump:

There is definate reason for it to be spoke of, many schools will find themselves in a situation where they only get to play 9 games. Even though there are many schools that are on the KHSAA website that are looking for schools, that list isn't updated very often, meaning that I'd say 95% of those schools have already filled their dates. Maybe all the schools that these teams were going to play could play each other but it is difficult to find games this late in the year. You said that these teams may have to travel far distances but at least they will have a game isn't hardly fair. An agreement/contract would have been broke therefore the school would have to pay the other team some money for breaching contract. However, I'm not real sure how that would work with a merger taking place. I do agree with you that scheduling of other teams shouldn't be taken into consideration with the merger but it is definately a big deal and should be spoke of.

I've heard that they are wanting to merge the athletes only this first year and keep the two schools in place. They want to slowly phase this thing with Mercer Co's ninth graders going to Harrodsburg to open room for the athletes coming in or something to that effect. This was from a Mercer teacher. They said that the parents of the Mercer Co 9th graders were not happy with having to go to Harrodsburg. Just what I've heard. I do think the merger is going to happen but it will be interesting to see if the "athletes only" thing floats or if that is another rumor.

With all do respect to the teams H'burg is scheduled to play, I must say...big deal.. Those schools can find games if they want, just check out the "open date" links on the KHSAA page..plenty of schools are looking for games, now, they may have to travel a little ways or play a bigger, smaller school...but, the fact that "it will be tough finding games for these schools" shouldnt even be spoke of, let alone considered in the decision of the merger taking place for the 2006 season or for any merger of any other schools in the future :jump:
It's pretty obvious where your loyalties lie ... little wonder you take it so personally.

Like it or not, leaving some teams without a game at this late date is a big deal. A lot of teams count on that fifth home game to make budget, and players from other schools are denied the chance to play in a 10th game.

This was Harrodsburg's schedule from last year. I assume it's much the same since we're in the middle of a contract cycle.

I take it that either South Laurel or North Laurel will have an open date on the bowl game, plus the other teams will have to scramble to try and fill an unexpected open date. Mercer County may end up with an open date as well, if their game with Harrodsburg is no more.

From a football/athletics standpoint, it might be better for everyone if Mercer and Harrodsburg put off consolidation for a year. But athletics certainly shouldn't override academics, and if consolidation is the answer, then so be it.

It is so easy from someone on the outside looking in to make observations about the whole merger topic. However, let's not forget the football players from both schools (Harrodsburg and Mercer). They are going to have their work cut out for them by combining and making this work (if the vote is a yes).

Harrodsburg players are going to have to learn a whole new football system and Mercer players are going to have to accept them and everyone is going to have to work together.

If the merge is a yes, everyone needs to have a positive attitude so the main goal can be reached by ALL football players...... and that is winning football games.

Personally, I think the football players from both schools are going to be receptive to this change, work together, and get the job done!:thumb:

Speculation on what plan they will use to phase in is just speculation. I am sure the admininstrators will have an official plan to present to their prospective boards of ed. before the vote. I doubt that they will send all the mercer freshman to the Harrodsburg building just so the athletes can have room to come to mercer high. But, i think it's great that athletics can have this kind of impact. Most likely all freshman (whether playing a sport or not) will go to the other building to make room for the growth of the overall student body. With this kind of undertaking there will be some uncomfortable changes or temporary adjustments but nothing that will have a major negative impact. GO Mercerburg!! :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

Ok then, spoke of..it's been spoke of, so from now on, lets just not give that whole idea of a reason why the merger shouldnt happen, any thought. :dancingpa

Yep, you're right, my loyalties in this whole thing lie with the H'burg/ Mercer County students, players, coaches and the entire community...as Im sure you feel about your school, community, etc...And, as far as you thinking that Im taking so "personally"...buddy, you're far from correct. I dont let things on a message board get to me "personally".

Im all for being respectful, accomadating to others needs, etc...but, in this case, when it gets down to the bottom line, you ( people deciding on the Mercer/H'burg merger) have to look out for your own well being (moreso the kids), and not worry about if this should happen or not because Trimble Co, Owen Co., etc. may only have 9 games next year. Well, wont that just be horrible?!!! Wouldnt that be a headline in a paper...

"H'burg/Mercer merger put off due to two football opponents being short a game for the 2006 season"

(and I mean no disrespect to the Trimble or Owen or any other schools that may be short a game next year if this goes through, but Im about positive that they know where Im comming from in saying what I've said) :thumb:

Yeh, here's a couple of thoughts. First, what kind of offense will they run? Next, i am with Buffalo. We know there is going to be ripple affect with the schedule but that should have no bearing on doing what is best for the kids and community of Mercerburg. It is not personal it is just business. If they merge the other schools will lose a game. They will survive and their schools and community will go on without a game with Harrodsburg. Whether or not the other schools have a game is not that big a deal in the overall scheme of things that are happening in Mercerburg. It is unfortunate but it is just part of the merger. Sooooo deal with it. You will continue to have a team regardless if we play you or not. Of course all of this is just my opinion and not to be of a negative nature to anyone who might be uhhh Offended. Go Mercerburg! :thumb: :thumb: :creepy:    :fire: :D :dancingpa :scared: :flame:

It would have been nice for this merger to be planned better so those teams would actually have had time to get a game. After all, Harrodsburg is under contract to these teams to play. I hope they have to pay the standard financial penalty to get out of these games. It does not speak well of either school system involved that this merger has been planned so poorly and so late.

Since there will not be a Harrodsburg there will be no contract fees involved. If it were so poorly planned then i don't think they would have been taking the time they have to make all go as smoothly as possible. Maybe this has been in the works much longer than you know. Maybe it has only become public as of late.

Right you are...I look at it kind of like this Mike , you can't make everybody happy, and it's no different in this case it seems. People out there that are more worried about opponents having 9 games instead of 10, and not whats best for a whole community...WOW! :scared:

I do not care if Harrodsburg/Marecer combine or not, but you have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to scheduleing, there are contracts that are being broken in this case, and also forfeit fees that need to be paid, but I would say that in this case most of the schools that Harrodsburg plays would let them out of the contract but they do not have to. And there are more than just 2 schools that would only have 9 games, its not just Trimble and Owen, but what about Danville,Boyle, Frankfort,Carroll,Garrard, and Bellevue. I know where you are coming from, you are being very disrespectful to Trimble and Owen Co. football programs. Just because they are from these places does not mean they should think that playing only 9 games is OK for them. Yes it would be a headline in thier paper. I think that Trimble played Harrodsburg a$$ off last year, only losing by 6 points, so why do you have to disrespect their programs like this? I hope that Harrosburg does not combine and comes to Trimble this year.:fire: :fire: :fight:

Actually I think you guys are missing the boat on Westsider's and 3Wishes posts. They were simply saying that while this is a good thing for Harrodsburg/Mercer (and I think it is) there are some who are adversely effected beyond that county. They aren't saying: "Don't merge because . . ." they are simply stating that your joy in the merger is not the first emotion of many outside of these 2 school systems. It means a lot of work for them to scramble and figure out where their schedules go from here.

For example, what will Danville and/or Boyle do now? I hope that Boyle and Mercerburg find a way to meet next year but we don't know that for sure. Boyle will be waiting to see months from now how it shakes out and in the meantime they might be losing some potentially better matchup to fill in the now vacant slot. The same is true for Danville.

Should such factors deter the merger? Absolutely not. In fact, it's long overdue in my mind.

Should the merger cause such celebration everywhere? Probably not to those who are scrambling now to figure out a season they probably was already put together in stone.

BTW, I have relatives in the community and lived there once. I believe it will benefit both schools tremendously but have yet to hear any word on Burgin's situation in all this. Does anyone know about that?

It's bussiness for these other teams also, some of these games that Harrodsburg is forfeiting are home games for these schools and that is money out of thier bugets for the schools other sports like Golf, Tennis, Cross Country, etc.
