Mercer / Harrodsburg Consolidation

Featured Replies

Is it possible that, being this late in the process as far as getting ready for the next school year, that the consolidation could be agreed upon this summer but with the actual implementation held off until the 2007-08 school year?

Just received a phone call that a vote on merger is going to take place this coming Tuesday night at a special called Harrodsburg School Board Meeting. This is very important news. I sure hope the powers that be know what they are doing if this goes through. Once it goes through - Harrodsburg School System and Harrodsburg sports will be no more!

Do you think that this is a done deal?

From everything that I have been hearing from parents with the Harrodsburg School System and Mercer County School System - this is a done deal. We will know for sure on Tuesday night.

I know all the Old Hogs will be nostalgic about their tradition, and they should be, but this could catapault Mercer Co. athletics to be one of the top schools in 2A in football, provided they are not too big.

I don't remember Virgie in the playoffs.

How can you consider the kids in Shelby Valley's football program as worse off than before consolidation when neither program did anything before consolidation?

Virgie was in the playoffs their last year of existence in 1989. The next year they made the playoffs with basically the same team as SV. I think theve squeaked in the playoffs as 4 seed 3-4 times and had maybe 10 coaches since then. There has been no stability in that program do to politics since its inception so yes the program has suffered and alot of kids have transferred schools because they are just tired of the constant drama.

Considering that the kids from Dorton didn't have the opportunity to play football, I would say the consolidation did some good. Just because Shelby Valley isn't winning, regardless of the reasons, doesn't mean the consolidation was a failure.

I think this will be great for the community...and sports too!!

It is not great for the scheduled opponents of Harrodsburg. It will be tough finding games for those schools.

I am hearing the samething. I ma hearing that the freshmen will attend classes at the harrodsburg campus and 10th through the 12th will be at Mercer county campus. I am also hearing that Coach yeast will become the assistant AD of the new district.

Mercer will definitely be a contender if the merger goes through IMO. Harrodsburg has had top notch talent every year as of late, but just hasn't had the numbers necessary to field a championship team. I think this is a positive move for the 2 schools involved and will bode well for Central Kentucky football in general.

Pineville beat Virgie 42-0 in the first round of the 1989 playoffs. Pikeville and Paintsville basically dominated the district in the 1980s, so I would be surprised if Virgie won any playoff games or made it very often before 1989.

Shelby Valley didn't have a lot to work with, but I agree that they should have done a better job by now when you consider how good the basketball program has been. But I still don't see how they'd be better off at Virgie or Dorton though, even in football.

Would you guys please start a thread about Shelby Valley consolidation? Leave this thread to what it is about Mercer/Harrodsburg.

With all do respect to the teams H'burg is scheduled to play, I must say...big deal.. Those schools can find games if they want, just check out the "open date" links on the KHSAA page..plenty of schools are looking for games, now, they may have to travel a little ways or play a bigger, smaller school...but, the fact that "it will be tough finding games for these schools" shouldnt even be spoke of, let alone considered in the decision of the merger taking place for the 2006 season or for any merger of any other schools in the future :jump:
