Is there a group of small market MLB teams that get together in August, have their own tournament and playoffs in the middle of the season, and then say that the winner of that tournament is now "World Champion"? And then go play in the regular MLB postseason in October?

and IF the All-A winner is legitimately the small school State Champion (with no *asterisk next to it)..

and IF (as some assert) that the very existence of the All-A means we have classes in basketball..

then WHY are All-A schools also allowed to participate in the KHSAA playoffs in March?

 

I mean, if the All-A is legit and for real, didn't the small schools have their state playoff, crown the State Champ, and order their rings? Explain to me how a school can possibly compete for a 2nd State Championship playing in different class in the same year?

 

Would you agree that the winners of this tournament are the "Statewide All A tournament Champions"? That seems to be very accurate description of what they are. It is a tournament that is statewide contested by schools that meet the tournament's description of an A sized school.

 

In terms of accomplishment, would it seem to be a greater accomplishment to win a football state championship (where you win a tournament against the other 31 teams in your division) or to win the All A where you were the winner of a 125 team field?

I don't think we could fit a disclaimer or qualifying statement on the rings, but maybe we could update the t-shirts, banners, and billboards?

Ever heard of the "World Baseball Classic"? Here is what it says in Wikipedia:

 

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is an international baseball tournament sanctioned from 2006 to 2013 by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and after 2013 by the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). It was proposed to the IBAF by Major League Baseball (MLB), the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), and other professional baseball leagues and their players associations around the world. It is the main baseball tournament sanctioned by the WBSC, which grants the winner the "World Champion".

 

So a player could be a baseball "World Champion" twice in one year.

 

The same thing happens in basketball. A player could be a NBA World Champion and a FIBA World Champion at the same time.

 

The same thing happens for entire teams in soccer. My favorite team, Arsenal, plays in the Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Capital One Cup, and The FA Cup. They could be champions of all of them.

 

So what makes this any different?

It is. Read the rest. I'm not going to restate everything again. It's not a sanctioned state playoff, the "State Champion" doesn't come from a tourney in the middle of the season, and we only have 1 class and 1 winner. But people who darn well know better treat it as a "State Championship" anyway...if not in word, in practice. Rings.. Banners.. Assemblies..Apparel.. I don't see the winners of the LIT or The Big M Chevrolet Tournament doing that. Sorry, in my world not everybody gets a trophy, and there's only 1 State Champion.

I think you are really a closet All A fan.

No one has ever claimed that the "A" State Tournament, nor the "A" State Champs are on "equal footing" with the KHSAA Sweet 16 State Champs.

 

It is merely a separate category, stating that they are the statewide champions among "A" schools, or what are determined to be "A" Schools.

 

How is it different than 1-A, 2-A, 3-A, 4-A, or 5-A Football "State Champs." Are they on "equal footing" with the 6-A State Champ??? Do they deserve to be called "state champs?"

 

The "A" in All "A" differentiates the two. If the truth be known the "A" Tournament and "A" State Championship probably has saved the Commonwealth from being dragged into a classified basketball state.

 

I agree with the bolded. My cousin who lives in Indiana said he hates the classification system they now have, and that a lot of fans of basketball in their state wishes they had gone to an All A type tournament like in Kentucky, and maybe stop the class system tournament movement in it's tracks.

Not everybody gets a trophy in the All A Tournament. 1 team in 125 is the Champion of this Statewide Tournament.

Just did a little research on my own and now I absolutlly dont have a problem with the winner of this Tourny calling themselves state champions. They are the small school state champions.

2015 Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic Basketball Tournament Fact Sheet

The Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic is a statewide basketball tournament for the smallest 120 high schools within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This is based on student enrollment for grades 9 – 12 as verified through Kentucky Department of Education records on October 1st of each year. The winners from the 16 boys' regional tournaments along with the 16 girls' regional tournament champions will advance to the statewide tournament held in Frankfort from

January 28 – February 1.

The purpose of the basketball tournament is to allow smaller

high schools in Kentucky an opportunity to compete in

basketball on a more equal basis, to showcase the athletes

Yes I would. It's an accurate way to phrase it. It just often doesn't come out that way

The All-A is what, schools with enrollment 500 and below? (I can't find the number) If you took all the football schools 500 and below and put them in 1 class, it would be classes 1A+2A+3A and most of 4A. If it was that way, football would be better.

When the All A first came around and then began its change to what we have today. There were schools that opted NOT to play in the All A due to it not being "worthy" of their "big time" approach to sports. Now some of those same programs in various sports claim titles.......... For those of us that have seen the development over the years this is frustrating. Make fun of the All A then when it became a better tourney and lucrative go ahead and jump in.
