January 28, 201511 yr Worst whoopin I ever took in my life was in Richmond coming to the defense of my loudmouth drunk friend when I was in college. Hornets nest was an understatement. Seems like a lot of folks are throwing the kid under the bus for even being in that situation. Same people likely don't remember their formative college years well enough.
January 28, 201511 yr I'm going to get absolutely blasted for this, but you know what, here goes: If you are standing at a bar and a 6'2, 275 pound offensive lineman comes up and starts something with you, and you have a bottle in your hand, then you are probably lying if you say you know exactly what you would have done unless you've been in that situation. When I was at UK a kid got killed at a party at some off-campus apartments because he took a punch, fell, and hit his head on the sidewalk. It only takes one hit, especially from a guy that size. You want to risk getting knocked out and him hitting you a few more times, possibly on top of you while you lay on a concrete floor that your head's hitting? Suddenly taking your chances with a jury might not be the worst thing. "Fight or flight" is impulsive. Given the tweets about throwing beer bottles at Noel's car and that he's the guy that started it who now wants sympathy, Scurry isn't really coming off as more than a punk to me if the surveillance video backs up the claims up. Sorry dude, you play for EKU and the UK players probably don't know who you are, much less care that they're in the "town" of some guy whose a D-1A God in his own mind. You're a big dude who seems like a bully that picked a fight and got messed up because of it.
January 28, 201511 yr Either Barker is making some bad choices on who to hang out with or he is a problem. You are who you hang out with and kids choose to hang out with people like them. Unfortunately for him, Barker is a UK football player and was the top recruit of the 2014 class. Everything he does is under a microscope and he gets no leeway in the court of public opinion. I hold nothing against a guy helping his friends in a bar fight, but this situation is very different because he is A) under age- Shouldn't have been there in the first place and B) high profile - should know that everyone knows who he is. He seems to be lacking the common sense necessary to make good sound decisions that will keep him out of the negative limelight. The kid from EKU could have started it, but his friends obviously finished it plus some. I just hope the kid begins to make better decisions. It is very hard to change a bad reputation.
January 28, 201511 yr Just party at Two Keys and you won't have these kinda problems. UK players, Barker specifically, have to be smarter than going back to that dorm. I'm sure its no secret to them that its where a majority of football players live. Even if he was going to find a lady or a buddy, it's just dumb.

Unless those people were high profile athletes, remembering college years doesn't matter. If 3 regular Joes were involved in a fight that put a 4th regular Joe in the hospital, this would not be news.

But my point is that folks act like they can't understand why they're in that position to begin with, you being one of those.

I've been "in that situation" before, where someone I knew was involved in an altercation of some sort at a bar. We always left immediately and NEVER went somewhere else that could add fuel to the fire, like the football dorm...

January 28, 201511 yr So, are we now justifying sucker punching someone from behind? Nope. Just explaining how to avoid conflict (or further conflict). Simple situational awareness.

If 3 regular Joes were involved in a fight that put a 4th regular Joe in the hospital, this would not be news. Are your 3 Regular Joe's having their School paid for them? Your right, it would be a Mute point wouldn't it. But it's not and this is not the 1st time a couple of these "High Profile Athletes" have been in the Spotlight for trouble. Right? What kind of Conversation do you think Calipari is revisiting with his "High Profile Athletes" this morning? Don't think he is not constantly drilling the "Be a good Student Athlete" concept into his players heads. Calipari has been here how long and with how many problems with his kids? Stoops has been here a 1/3 of the time and is failing quite Miserably!

Although I have never been in a bar fight, I can understand how this can happen. This story is on Deadspin and other national websites because of the profile of the people involved, not because it was a regular college students.
