January 28, 201511 yr New details released by the Richmond Police Chief: “On 01/25/2015, at approximately 5:00 P.M., a complainant reported to Richmond Police that he had been assaulted at a local bar by several male subjects. “The complainant reported that he was at Jerzee’s, 122 E. Main Street, at approximately 12:30 A.M. when he was grabbed by three to four males who began hitting the complainant repeatedly in the head. At one point the complainant reported losing consciousness. Following the assault, the complainant attempted to walk back to EKU, where he is a student. He was accompanied by two females who were attempting to aid him. Eventually an ambulance was summoned and the complainant was taken to Baptist Health hospital for treatment. “The complainant reported that he suffered cuts under his right eye, above his left eye, and to his head that required closure by stitches or staples. He also suffered a broken nose and broken bones in and around his right cheek bone and orbital socket. The officer taking the report observed severe swelling and bruising to the complainant’s face. “The investigation is currently ongoing with interviews of witnesses being conducted and other evidence being analyzed. Once the investigation has been completed and the facts are fully established, the department will take the appropriate action with regard to the filing of charges against any person deemed to be culpable. Until that time, the department will have no further comment on the matter. “ Unless "Deadspin" used a reflective picture, the majority of the young man's damage appeared to be around and under his left eye in their photo. Know that doesn't look good, but if this thing sees a trial, it's going to be quite awhile and by that time, he'll possibly have healed, but screenshots of his Twitter feed that you know have been saved and captured, statements from others on him being the initial aggressor, and security footage from the establishment won't have changed. Maybe they are out there, but I don't think I've seen anything other than the guy's own statement that indicates that he wasn't the one who started it. Between the sheer size of the guy, his Twitter feed, and, if it corroborates the statements of people who said he's the initial aggressor, the security footage, there's some things that will/could be working against him. Same time, other things that won't have changed will be the Airsoft gun incident and people's perceptions (unless they are on the field and starring). Once things cool off some, it's possible that he won't be nearly as sympathetic if the security footage shows him instigating the whole thing. If he shows up to testify and jurors see a guy of his size in person, then watch video of him starting a fight (if that's how it happened), then that's going to lessen the blow for the UK guys. At the same time, the whole notion of sympathy probably changes drastically if he has some fairly significant permanent impairment(s) as a result. IMO, as things stand now, the security footage probably winds up being the biggest deal in this whole thing if the guy makes a full recovery.
January 28, 201511 yr Nah, they are just saying he is stupid for not running back to Lexington. Which doesn't make sense to me but whatever. Like I said earlier he was probably drunk or drinking at some point (He was at a bar so I think that's a fair assumption) and going to stay with his buddy at the dorms. Do people want him to drive home instead? I don't really have that much of an issue with that part of the story.

Uber, a cab, a friend....a myriad of ways to get home besides sleeping in the football dorm after just being, at the very least, on the fringe of a group of dudes that just wore out an EKU football player.

The guy that took a beer bottle to the guys face is in a world of trouble. That's assault with a deadly weapon.

That does bring up a good question on how a jury would see it. If one guy starts it and the other guy uses a bottle to defend himself, how harsh do you go with the punishment? Obviously the answer would depend on if the guy was really defending himself or not and how he wielded the bottle. If it goes to trial it will be interesting to follow the testimony and hopefully video of the altercation. No matter what else the guy who used the bottle should be out of the program.

The decidedly pro-Barker group keeps bringing up the sucker-punch in the dorm and that he is going to be asked if he wants to press charges. The pro-EKU group keeps bringing up, and deservedly so, the young man that had his face smoked by a beer bottle by someone. As a neutral observer, the latter is going to be a MAJOR issue, the former, to me, is a much lesser situation and I can't get over how easily avoided it could have been. Am I justifying a sucker punch? Obviously not. Am I even a little surprised it happened in the football dorm, after what happened at Jerzee's, not at all. I'm sure Drew thought, "I didn't hit him, what do I have to worry about, I just want to see [whomever]...", but you have to step back and see the potential for what could happen and avoid it.

January 28, 201511 yr EKU Football Player Badly Hurt In Fight At Richmond Bar - LEX18.com | Continuous News and StormTracker Weather Right now it seems to be a lot of finger pointing, EKU student's bouncer boyfriend saying it was started by UK and back-up UK QB's high school friend saying it was started by the EKU player. Sometimes it takes the bigger and better man to walk away. Sure your ego may be bruised because in any other circumstance you would’ve willingly thrown hands but sometimes a bruised ego is a lot better than unwanted attention and the baggage that it brings.
