I'm a construction estimator and project manager. I do it professionally, just as Joe played football professionally. Still, I don't think I could teach 80 high schoolers how to do what I do.

 

Yeah, but if you could teach, the skills and knowledge that you picked up actually being an estimator and manager would be invaluable as you attempted to teach others.

 

Teaching skills being equal, I'd much rather my teacher be someone that has actually done the task being taught to me.

I definitely agree with you there. I just think that people who assume that being a professional athlete automatically translates into being a good coach are pretty far off the mark.

 

And just for the record, that was an admission to you - a Highland Bluebird - being experienced in treachery, right?

Very true. If the transition to playing professionally to coaching was that easy there would be a lot more former players doing it at a high level.

 

I have always found the best former players who become successful coaches in all sports are usually the players that weren't stars during their playing careers. Maybe it is because they had more time to take in what their coaches were doing during the games, I don't know but it always seemed to be the case for the more successful coaches.

I assume they have somebody in mind and an announcement will be soon. I was told by a parent tonight that weightlifting and conditioning is temporarily suspended until a new coach is hired. Ridiculous if that is the case.

Weights and conditioning are not suspended. It never ended really other than the couple days last week with the news.

There are a lot of parents who "know what's really going on with everything". From what I've experienced in the past coaching searches at Cov Cath, those parents are usually the last folks to listen to.

 

The current administration seems to have a track record of handling these situations by keeping a very appropriate amount of privacy and by only involving the parties who need know things in the loop. Weightlifting is weightlifting. It can be overseen for a month or two by just about anyone. If it gets to be late April and we don't have a coach, I'll be concerned. In the meantime, I know Bob Rowe and Mike Guidugli are giving things the due-diligence that they deserve.

Why are are they bringing in a contractor to run their off season program? Does this mean that none of the coaches are returning and there isn't anyone in the building to run the program?

I have heard at least 20 have applied as of Friday, and more will be coming. And currently, not a single staff member will be returning according to what I have been told. This new Head Coach will have to start from scratch and come up with an entirely new coaching staff.

Having a large number of applicants is a good thing.

 

I guess having ASAP come in takes some of the off season time commitment off the coaches table.

Wow! To the whole situation. There is some serious "bringing the hammer down" thingy going on in the program. This is bigger than what everyone is leading on. Not just a coaching change. Some "big" boys are speaking out.

Since the new coach is going to be given the opportunity to assemble his own coaching staff completely from scratch...as was done when Coach Rodenberg took over, when Coach Brossart took over, and Coach Wirth took over. I believe Rodenberg did start completely from scratch with his staff, and I don't Coach Brossart or Coach Wirth had too much overlap with their predecessors' coaching staffs.

 

I'll be interested to see if the new coaches brings back the likes of Lynn Ray (linebackers), Tim Hobbs (quarterbacks), and Derek Roedig (wide receivers) - all of whom have well established roots in Cov Cath football coaching that certainly precedes Coach Wirth.

I would be very surprised if Roedig comes back.

I'm not sure what the big deal is regarding the assistant coaches. I would imagine its customary anywhere to basically sever all Asst Coaches once the head coach is gone. Why, as a Principle or athletic director would you promise a position to assistant coaches not knowing if the new coach would want them on their staff? Who the assistants are is up to the new head coach. Whether or not they ask some of the old assistants back is up to them. So it's still quite possible that some of them would be asked back- if they were willing of course.
