You're correct, though. Joe Walter was an assistant coach this past season for the freshman team at Cov Cath. However, I think putting someone at the helm of a varsity program like Cov Cath on the basis that they are a retired NFL player and that they were an assistant freshman coach for one year is a little short-sighted. A program like Cov Cath needs someone with a solid high school varsity coaching resume, and preferably head coaching experience at that level as well.

You are underestimating what it takes to be a strong coach.

 

Before anyone thinks I am being critical of Joe - I AM NOT. He may be the best coach ever. We just do not know and CCH isn't going to a hire a "we just do not know" coach.

It's very simple, just because you are/were a pro player does not mean you would be a good head coach. Knowing your position in a sport, any sport, does not mean that you know how to be a head coach and run a program.

I'm a construction estimator and project manager. I do it professionally, just as Joe played football professionally. Still, I don't think I could teach 80 high schoolers how to do what I do.

Correct, just because someone does something doesn't mean they can teach it, not to mention everything else that goes along with being a HC. I know from experience that Joe is great with kids and is great at teaching O-Line to all levels.
