If she can stop and pump the gas, go in and pay for the gas without taking her eyes off the car, or waking a sleeping baby, what is the harm.

I do not condone the mother's actions at all. Waking a sleeping child is not harmful or dangerous. Leaving a child unattended is.

There is zero excuse to leave the kid in the car. Luckily the baby is safe, but I'm sure this mother has learned an invaluable lesson...

I really hope they catch the criminal. Chances are, he will do it again. My guess is that he/she also got the Amber Alert and ditched the car, knowing the whole world is looking for it.

 

He had a slight glimmer of decency to abandon the car somewhere so it could be found quickly. Heck, I would not be surprised if he parked it and ran into the gas station saying to the clerk, "Hey--doesn't that car look like the one from the AMBER ALERT?" Then ran off again.

 

But still a criminal thug.

IMO, this woman should be charged with neglect. I don't care about whether she may be a single mom or didn't want to wake a sleeping baby. It was stupid decision and one that we hear about frequently. How ignorant can you be? Who can't get a bank debit card these days to pay for your gas at the pump?! I am absolutely furious about this!

Did she already pump the gas or was she going in to pay first? I just don't understand the thought process of taking the one kid in with you and leaving the other. I could MAYBE see doing it if you locked the doors but even then it's probably a bad decision.

I'd like to know how many parents haven't at least once, left one in the carseat for a quick in and out to pay for gas or something similar? Sure the car should have been locked, sure the keys should have been with the parent. I've done it.

Were you at the Ft. Mitchell Kroger's? That is right next to where they found the car.

 

I wonder if the thief's phone went off with the alert and it spooked him into parking the car and running?

 

I was at the Latonia Kroger's at the time. I am not "high class" enough to shop at the Ft. Mitchell Kroger's.

...for the record, and a bit of levity, it won't work with mother-in-laws. I've left the car running, door open, and a sign on the window and she's always there when I come out of the gas station.

You never, ever leave a child unattended in a car. I don't care the circumstances. There are way too many crazy people in this world today. We hear about these kinds of things happening all the time, just not as often locally. An infant is the EASIEST child to get out of the car. They're in a carrier (they should be). There's no buckling and unbuckling involved. You pull out the carrier with a click of a button, and you put the carrier back in. The 2 year old took more work to get in and out. I firmly believe the mom needs to be charged and/or fined. She put her child in harms way out of pure laziness. These situations and parents that don't properly buckle in their kids really tick me off.

 

As for those question how it unfolded, just watch the surveillance video. The mom pulled up to a pump that is furthest away from the building. She and her 2 year old walk to the building. As soon as she enters the building, a guy jumps into the car and take off.

Bet he checks the back seat next time he heists a car, probably cleaning out his pants this morning.

I know Megan Lewin, one of the women who found the baby. Super neat young lady. So glad that it turned out ok.

 

Those Amber alerts are awesome. I was with friends just down the street from where the baby was found. All our phones went off at the same time.

 

It was stupid to leave a newborn in a car, unlocked with the keys in it.

 

Curious to know if others think it might be acceptable if she left the child in the car, but locked it and took the keys? The car would be in her sight the entire time. Regardless, I bet she never does that again.
