Consider Preston King at Iroquois

 

In Coach King's first year he took Iroquois to a 11-2 record, won 2 playoff games, and narrowly lost to John Hardin in the semifinals, 7-6.

 

He inherited a team that was 5-5 in 2013, and in the 10 years prior to that, they were 13-85 with only one playoff appearance.

Joe Morris at Mayfield. He has taken a team to 6 straight state title games and most recently won 3 in a row which is a first at Mayfield. Given Mayfield's success for years that even stands out as a huge feat.

 

Also I believe Mayfield just moved into the #4 all time wins spot in the country.

(Some said may have been the toughest road to the finals in 6A (Rd1-Henry Clay…Rd 2-Scott County @ Scott County…Rd 3-Central Hardin @ Central Hardin and losing to eventual 6A champion Trinity). Based on these accomplishments Coach Mofield should be considered 2014 Coach of the Year.

 

I would have to disagree about the 'toughest road'. I'd take those three over Trinity's schedule. Yeah, Henderson County wasn't a terrible hurdle, but Male and St. X more than equal Henry Clay, Scott County and Central Hardin.

 

That said, I do think Coach Mofield did a fantastic job. Meade county had a real fire under them and they showed that their appearance in the finals last year was no fluke. I'd put Coach Mofield and Beatty in the same tier for this year. Beatty went into the playoffs with a 5-5 team facing two teams that had already beat his boys. Hell, if you go back to the poll on the thread here Male was the favorite for that game by a 70%-30% vote.

 

However, I would give the award to neither of them. I think Dixie's coach, Coach Brossart, deserves it. His team didn't have the hardest road to the finals, or the toughest schedule in the state, but they went leagues above what they normally accomplish and beat teams that weren't pushovers by any stretch. Here's hoping that this Dixie team is just the first of many excellent ones.

3)Larry French - The turnaround.

4)Tim Mattingly - Inherited a really good team but to have the courage to change the offense, brought a toughness to their defense.

Kevin Wallace. BG was better than I expected them to be even though they were expected to win another title. I know folks won't agree with it but I don't care. He's my choice.

 

 

Now, to play along for kicks and giggles...

 

Brian Weinrich. The saying goes "you don't replace the legend, you replace the guy who replaced the legend". What he did at Highlands this season with the scrutiny he had to coach under is an amazing accomplishment. Regardless of what people may think and say not many people would have been able to walk into that spot and do what Highlands did this season.

Lance Gregory

Lots of great candidates but if I were pressed I would have to vote for Coach Brossart from Dixie. Did just an amazing job in getting them to their first championship game, particularly after a rough start. It's hard for me to go against Coach Weinrich from Highlands but something tells me he's going to win it some day. Unfortunately I am not familiar with other coaches from around the state but it sounds like there's a lot of great candidates.

What about Harold Davis at DeSales? He has a budding powerhouse in Louisville's south end.

Without a doubt, I think Preston King at Iroquois should get the award.

Wow. There are many deserving candidates for this one. But I have to agree with Ram. The season Iroquois had is incredible. They probably won more games this year than they won in the previous 5 or 6 years combined. When was the last time Iroquois even had a winning record, let alone going deep in the playoffs and only losing 2 games?

As good a year as many of the candidates mentioned had, no one can top the Iroquois story.

My conclusion is that Kentucky is blessed with a lot of Great coaches and many deserving candidates. They are several guys who you can't go wrong picking.

With the lack of size and talent..should Rogers from Paducah be included? Making it to the regional final with a brutal schedule and probably the smallest team in size and numbers that PT has had for a LOOOOONg time.

It's Coach King at Iroquois, and there's no dissuading me. There is absolutely no way one can understand the hurdles he faces at Iroquois, and I'm hopeful he can do for Iroquois, what Coach Scroggins has done for Central. I do feel Coach King has a harder row to hoe, but heck...look what he did this year!
