If you had to nominate one​ coach for overall KY COA for 2014 who would it be, and why?

This will not get many people to agree with me, but my choice would be Coach Brossart for Dixie. Taking the team for the first time in school history to the State Title game was pretty impressive.

I'm biased to Northern Kentucky, but Coach Brossart and the HC at Highlands (Name escapes me) should be in the discussion.

John Hines at Pulaski Co. Lost QB for 5 or 6 weeks played a WR, a TE and a Freshman at QB until starter came back. Then won schools first ever state title.

Coach A : Takes what he has talent wise and wins more games than an average coach would.

Coach B : Navigates team through ups, downs, and adversity to win more than the average coach would.

Coach C: Takes talent, egos, and pressure and wins more games than the average coach would.

Brian Weinrich- Highlands

 

Yeah I know it is HIGHLANDS and all they do is win Titles.... but to me I thought Weinrich did a great job even as far as the Championship game. First year after replacing a legend. Not the most talented Highlands team and struggled at times early. Over came numerous season ending injuries. Played potentially one of the top teams in Florida really close. Then the Championship game... go from giving up 42 points in a Half and losing by 3 TD's to shutting them out the 2nd Half and winning.

Coach Larry Mofield (Meade County). Coach Mofield’s body of work has been nothing short of amazing (2013 State Runner up & 2014 State Semi Finals Runner up). Coach Mofield led Meade County to back to back Regional Championships (2013-2014) to include a record of 23-6 the last 2 seasons (Highest winning percentage in Meade County history). What is amazing is Coach Mofield accomplished this after losing perhaps the best defensive minded coach in 6A (This year’s 6A coach of the year Tim Mattingly- Central Hardin HS) and graduating one of the most talented senior classes to ever come through Meade County.

 

In addition to finishing with another double digit win season, Coach Mofield led the Greenwaves to victories in the playoffs (Some said may have been the toughest road to the finals in 6A (Rd1-Henry Clay…Rd 2-Scott County @ Scott County…Rd 3-Central Hardin @ Central Hardin and losing to eventual 6A champion Trinity). Based on these accomplishments Coach Mofield should be considered 2014 Coach of the Year.

TJ Maynard-- Russell.

 

Returned the Devils to many plateaus that they had not experienced in the last 6 or 7 years. A District championship, and a state semifinal appearance in his first season at the helm.

Lance Gregory at Graves County. Team started 1-3 and some changes were made with personnel. Team won out to the title game, including an improbable shutout win over Bowling Green to end the state's longest winning streak.

Here is my top 4.

 

1. Coach Hines - Pulaski - For the same reasons JumperDad listed. Finally got that ring!

 

2. Coach French - Southwestern - Went from 1-9 to 10-3 and a district title (over the future state champion Pulaski team) and a regional final appearance. Any other team make that drastic of a change in one year?

 

3. Coach Browning - Williamsburg - Nice run and came 1 point from doing what most thought was impossible (with Mayfield in the way) in 1A.

 

4. Coach Gregory - Graves - For the same reasons The Scribe listed. I know I expected no one other than BG in the finals.

I think he should at least be in the mix. He turned a below average team into one of the final four in 14 weeks. Most impressive thing I have seen in coaching in some time.

Larry French. The turnaround is not something every one can do

Consider Preston King at Iroquois

 

In Coach King's first year he took Iroquois to a 11-2 record, won 2 playoff games, and narrowly lost to John Hardin in the semifinals, 7-6.

 

He inherited a team that was 5-5 in 2013, and in the 10 years prior to that, they were 13-85 with only one playoff appearance.

Coach A : Takes what he has talent wise and wins more games than an average coach would.

Coach B : Navigates team through ups, downs, and adversity to win more than the average coach would.

Coach C: Takes talent, egos, and pressure and wins more games than the average coach would.

 

If that is the criteria I will certainly cast a ballot for Cooper Coach Randy Borchers because he meets all 3 categories listed above. Sure, he didn't win it all but had a pretty good season in 2014:

 

1. Returned only 2 Starters off of the 2013 team that went 3-8

2. From the Intra-squad scrimmage to game 4 lost 10 starters

3. Picked 3rd in their district and ends up tied for 1st going 6-4 in the regular season

4. Predicted to lose every playoff game and goes out and wins 3 games and captures a 5A regional title and loses to eventual State Champion Pulaski Co. in the State Semis and finishes the season 9-5

5. All the above with a TEAM that has no superstars, no D1 players, and maybe only 1-2 a D2 players

 

May not be the popular pick because all the others listed are certainly deserving, especially Coach Brossart and Coach Hines, but Coach Borchers held the ship together with duck tape and fishing wire and made one heck of a run creating a memorable season.
