Bolden, Perry, Holeman, Matlock, McDonald, and Gooden all play in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament coming up. We will get to see their talent on display and I think we will get a better idea where they stand. If only Spalding and Justice were playing as well.

McDonald is a good player but nowhere near the level Spalding is and that is why McDonald is going to NKU and Spalding is going to Louisville.

 

I could totally be wrong but I know both boys and have watch them play various times. Regardless what school one goes to, I look to the skill of player and sorry, McDonald beats him hands down. Spalding will always get the big dunks but (from what I saw) the size/strength of McDonald out weights ,pun intended , beats him ever time.

 

Looking at the current roster of UL players, in his current size/strength, how will he compete for a position against the size/strength and overall toughness of UL's big-men roster.

 

Before everyone jumps, I hope I'm wrong and when get gets to UL they bulk him up so that he just becomes a monster of a player I expect him to become.

At this point I think we have to add serious consideration to Perry (Ballard) and Matlock (Hopkinsville). They both have had very impressive starts to the season. There are probably others, but these two have taken over games. Perry's performance against Montverde was exceptional as was Matlock's performances vs UHA and Fern Creek. I still think it is Spalding's to lose, but he better pick up the pace on production. Right now I think Perry is a very close second.

Spalding - 12.5 ppg / 6.0 rpg

Justice - 24.0 ppg/ 1.8 rpg

Holeman - 15.5 ppg/ 11.0 rpg

Perry - 23.8 ppg/ 7.0 rpg

Matlock - 23.5 ppg/ 5.9 rpg

 

I'm admittingly biased, but Ray has yet to play significant minutes, every game has been a blowout. Those stats you list also don't show his steal and block averages.

That is true (blocks/steals)...nor does it list assists. That is why I still think it is Spalding's to lose. But as the seasons gets deeper, Trinity will be challenged and he will have to live up to the hype in those games (City of Palms Tourny). Perry already stepped up in a big way against the No. 1 team in the nation. That game itself should propel him to near the top if not on top.

If they are against topflight competition, they should by all means. The drawback is that the Kentucky voters may not be familiar with these teams, some of which are likely better than what Kentucky has to offer.

Spalding is going to UL because his wing span is 7'0" plus. It's called potential. As many have stated his desire and motor are question marks. He has the potential to play in the NBA IF Pitino can get him to play hard.

 

McDonald is solid. Similar to Spalding his stat line will not compare to others because they play on great teams with other great players. I expect McDonald to contribute to NKU as a freshman. Could he have gone bigger? I think most would agree yes, however maybe NKU was the best fit for him.

 

From my understanding McDonald did more than hold his own against Spalding last year and in the summer.

Really? All blowouts? Interesting.

Perry, Matlock, and Justice are naturally going to have better numbers for the simple fact that they are "the guy" for their team and are going to take more shots than guys like Spalding and Bolden.

 

Holman and Spalding aren't going to put up huge scoring numbers because they will see a lot of double teams down low and in Spalding's case, he plays with 5 other future college players.

 

Spalding affects the game more than any other player in the state, regardless of stats, but any of the above players mentioned would be deserving of the award.

There is some truth to that, but that isn't completely true. Not sure about Ballard, but Hoptown has had 4 different players score 20+ this year and four averaging double digit points. Gary has really turned it up lately.

 

One thing that will never show up in the stats is defense. Spalding and Matlock are the two best defensive players out the group in my opinion. And you were totally right on Perry
