Spalding is going to UL because his wing span is 7'0" plus. It's called potential. As many have stated his desire and motor are question marks. He has the potential to play in the NBA IF Pitino can get him to play hard.

 

McDonald is solid. Similar to Spalding his stat line will not compare to others because they play on great teams with other great players. I expect McDonald to contribute to NKU as a freshman. Could he have gone bigger? I think most would agree yes, however maybe NKU was the best fit for him.

 

From my understanding McDonald did more than hold his own against Spalding last year and in the summer.

There is some truth to that, but that isn't completely true. Not sure about Ballard, but Hoptown has had 4 different players score 20+ this year and four averaging double digit points. Gary has really turned it up lately.

 

One thing that will never show up in the stats is defense. Spalding and Matlock are the two best defensive players out the group in my opinion. And you were totally right on Perry

 

Agree on Matlock and Spalding being pretty good defensively too.

 

Perry and Bolden are no slouch either though.

Call me a homer for the 11th and while I don't think he'll win it, a kid who I think at least deserves to be involved in the discussion is Matt Rose of Lexington Christian Academy. D1 caliber kid who can score in bunches and will put up big numbers despite playing in the 11th. IIRC, he has given a verbal to Samford already.

I believe Dwayne "Waynie" Sutton of Manual needs to be in the discussion. He is averaging 25.8 ppg and 11 rebounds a game in about 20 minutes per game. The Crimsons have started the season 5-0 with an average win margin of 33 points. He has not played in the fourth quarter of 4 of the 5 games they've played and sat out about two minutes of each of the other quarters. The schedule should pick up this week with games against Butler, Lafayette, and Scott County. They also play in the Republic Bank Classic at Lex. Catholic after Christmas. I know I constantly tooted Sutton's horn last season but someone needs to because he needs to be in the conversation when speaking of the top players in the state. This season he is shooting 54% from the field overall and 33 % from 3 point range. He is also a great defender who can guard 1 thru 5.

From what it looks like from the outside is McDonald played very well in the EYBL while Spalding left the Travelers to play for the The Ville. Sounds is much in the same way as taking himself out of the 1st half of Covington Catholic.

 

Like the kid but at this moment he doesn't have the needed fire to make in impact at UL. Then again, I'm positive Pitino will surely light that fire and it will be up to him to keep it from going out.

He had a big summer on the EYBL circuit...only around 6'5 but was out rebounding the top big men in the country on a regular basis...he can play.

He is gonna play against some very high talent in Florida tho, lets see if his fire gets lit there.

I could totally be wrong but I know both boys and have watch them play various times. Regardless what school one goes to, I look to the skill of player and sorry, McDonald beats him hands down. Spalding will always get the big dunks but (from what I saw) the size/strength of McDonald out weights ,pun intended , beats him ever time.

 

Looking at the current roster of UL players, in his current size/strength, how will he compete for a position against the size/strength and overall toughness of UL's big-men roster.

 

Before everyone jumps, I hope I'm wrong and when get gets to UL they bulk him up so that he just becomes a monster of a player I expect him to become.

Anybody who puts up 25 pts. against Montverde then turns around the next day and scores at will against Seventh Woods...has my attention. Jalen Perry is the go to player on Ballards team...but he probably would be the go to guy on any team in Ky..

I am not taking anything from the player or the award, because it is a great honor. But it recent years the winner has not had much of an impact at the next level,,I don't see that changing this year either,,You really have to go all the way back to 1989 and 1990, Houston and Morton to see the winner show up at their next stop..
