Was tonight a moral victory for Covington Catholic?

Featured Replies

As an ex Colonel, as someone that still wear that with pride, as someone who has watched the bloodbaths of the last decade, and as someone that will be sending my 9 year old son to CovCath in a few years, I will say, call it a moral victory or not, I was VERY proud of those boys last night who left it all on the field and almost pulled it off. A job VERY well done by the coaching staff, players and supporters.

We can overanalyze, pick apart the coaching staff, crucity Wirth by internetting, and all that stuff we're all guilty of....the fact remains, what they showed last night was better than we've seen and should give all of those boys - and coaches - returning next year alot of hope, even more pride and motivate them to work in the weight room and practice field over the next year.

I will say this, my son grew up and went to grade school with several of the Colonels at St Joes, and every single one of those boys came up and congratulated him and wished him well the rest of the way. To me, that means a whole lot to him and our family. They easily could have just walked away, and you couldn't blame them because of the emotion of the game. Those are great kids from great families evidenced by this.

Not sure if you can call it a moral victory. Not a big believer in those anyway. Especially at this level of play at these schools. I'm just glad my kids don't have to play the Blueboys anymore. My ulcer can't handle it! Great job St Joe Colonels!

I have always defined a "moral victory" as meaning that you played either certain players that wouldn't usually have played (ie...senior day), or for some other reason, and although you gave great effort, you lost when you probably would have won otherwise......

There is no moral victory in aregional playoff loss.

My definition of "moral victory" is a team that survives adversity and fights back hard based on principles of spirit, togetherness and commitment, ultimately over-achieving albeit to a close loss. Basically, it's the same as "character" of course, but that is why we play the game. In losing, you can still win character -- that is a moral victory in my book.

The score at the end of the 1st quarter was 20-0. Highlands had 181 1st quarter yards to Cov. Cath's minus-7.

At that point would anyone have predicted the opening paragraph of the Enquirer's story to be:

"In the 100th year of Highlands football, the Bluebirds remain alive for a 23rd KHSAA state championship and 26th overall following Friday's thrilling 37-34 victory over rallying Covington Catholic in a Class 4A regional final at David Cecil Memorial Stadium in Fort Thomas."

I'm going to go with yes on the moral victory. Like I would say the Unforgettables loss to Duke was a moral victory.

And now on the basketball...(and swimming).

Ru, I believe there is nothing to see here. No one believes this was a moral victory for Cov. Cath. I don't think Cov. Cath. would ever have to hang on to a "moral victory". They are better than that.

Everyone does not agree with you.

I believe only a losing team or its supporters can determine if a loss is a moral victory. How many CCH players or fans believe this game qualifies?

Not so fast Flot! Jack Fassel's grandson is still playing! Give ole Jack a shout out next time for all of us.

Good point. Didn't mean to bail on the Bluebirds and certainly not on Jack's lineage. Will stayed dialed in for Jack, St. Joes and Villa Hills. :thumb:

Don't have to when you root for Highlands.

Unless they are playing the GCL or Colerain (who they refuse to schedule). It's all relative Ru. :D :sneaky:

On topic, if anyone at CCH describes this as a moral victory, then it's time to stop scheduling the game. It's that simple. CCH has to find a way to beat Highlands, plain and simple. I will say this, from an outsiders perspective, it is not a rivalry in the traditional sense. How can it be? It as lopsided as any I've ever seen, at any level.

It's like the little brother constantly trying to find a way to beat his big brother in anything and is never successful. Maybe one day the older brother is tired and feels bad and doesn't go 100% balls to the wall to win and the little brother sneaks in a W, but that does not make it fair...or a rivalry.

I didn't realize you could schedule a different team in the playoffs...

Thank you TDY. I will miss the excitement of my son playing as well. Wish Johnny good luck and see you at the festival.

The Colonels came back and only lost by 3, is it a moral victory for the Colonels?

Any changes on the horizon in Park Hills?

No moral victory here.

Yes 100% certain there will be changes next season for the CCH Football team.

They graduate 26 seniors.

To the rest of your comment and the insinuation. Not very classy. Actually shameful coming from an adult.

I am personally disappointed in you as a person.
