Was tonight a moral victory for Covington Catholic?

Featured Replies

It was definitely a moral victory. 20-0 end of 1. It had the potential to be a running clock 60-0 beat down again. If that happens, Covcath is questioning themselves all off season again. Instead we'll get an off season of this is our year, Highlands is down, etc... Wait, we've heard that before too. Start the clock, have a pajama party, buy Red uniform pants this time.

On a serious note. Covcath finished the season strong and really manned up in the post season.

No moral victory here.

Yes 100% certain there will be changes next season for the CCH Football team.

They graduate 26 seniors.

To the rest of your comment and the insinuation. Not very classy. Actually shameful coming from an adult.

I am personally disappointed in you as a person.

The boys and coaches don't feel like this was a moral victory. Not one bit. They know they can beat Highlands as evidence via the recent JV and Frosh games the past few years.

Maybe some parents who don't know any better feel differently- but I'm not one of them.

Proud of their effort and their heart? Absolutely. I'd have every one of these kids next to me in a scrum. But not a moral victory.

Moral victory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A moral victory occurs when a person, team, army or other group loses a confrontation, and yet achieves some other moral gain. This gain might be unrelated to the confrontation in question, and the gain is often considerably less than what would have been accomplished if an actual victory had been achieved.

Using the definition above as a guide tells us this is a moral victory. It doesn't say anything about being happy with the loss or not having sad feelings over the loss.

CCH has proven once again, sadly, that they are not as good as the Birds. Trust me. I've lived through this as a parent of a player who lost some tough games against the Birds.

This team was overhyped from the get-go. They are a talented bunch but not as talented as some tried to have us believe. Some talented individuals as there always are at CCH. Just not enough juice against a program like the Birds.

So, they got their butts handed to them in September and looked pitiful in doing so. They were underdogs coming in. They got down by 20+ TWICE yet they came back.

That's a moral victory no matter how upset the players were after the game. I applaud them for battling.

Beating teams at the frosh and JV level tells us nothing about the ability to beat them at the varsity level. Way too many variables.

I liked the way this team battled especially after getting hammered over a brief stretch. Shows a lot of character.

As an ex Colonel, as someone that still wear that with pride, as someone who has watched the bloodbaths of the last decade, and as someone that will be sending my 9 year old son to CovCath in a few years, I will say, call it a moral victory or not, I was VERY proud of those boys last night who left it all on the field and almost pulled it off. A job VERY well done by the coaching staff, players and supporters.

We can overanalyze, pick apart the coaching staff, crucity Wirth by internetting, and all that stuff we're all guilty of....the fact remains, what they showed last night was better than we've seen and should give all of those boys - and coaches - returning next year alot of hope, even more pride and motivate them to work in the weight room and practice field over the next year.

Well said, sir.

Could have been a moral victory for a team with no history/ambition. However, CovCath has titles, history and ambition. No such thing as a moral victory in this situation.

My point being Clyde- this group has had success against Highlands in the very recent past- albeit at the JV and Frosh level. They know they are capable of winning- so no moral victory.

I didn't realize you could schedule a different team in the playoffs...

Ohh boy...hand-holding necessary.

Obviously, talking about the regular season contest. Not the playoffs. Wow...sad I had to explain that.

Well, I suppose it's sad that I have to explain then...the Highlands/Cov Cath regular season matchup is a district matchup. It's not an option.

That is a hall of fame classic response. :D

:ohbrother: DOH!!! Didn't realize that. Thought there were in different districts.

As a Buckeye, the whole "district" concept is completely foreign to me.

Well, then, good luck with the Birds next year! Have several Colonels as in-laws and it pains them to see the recent results.

I haven't read this entire thread (maybe someone has already asked this), but my question would be can you have both a moral victory and have your entire defense end up on the wrong end of Sportscenter highlight? :D

Moral victories are like taking your cousin to the prom. Everyone might be impressed at how hot your date is, but when they find out she's your cousin, well, bleah.

The CovCath kids can walk a little straighter after this game. They got down badly twice, but played with fire and fight and eventually had themselves in position to shock the Kentucky high school football world and make themselves legends like the Mud Bowl squad. I was impressed. Moral victory? Worthless, but not giving up and shaming your school and your heritage means everything.
