Hit 'em where it hurts.

I was spanked, and therefore learned and behaved. I have spanked all 4 of mine, including the little girl. I have 4 very good children, comparatively speaking. I believe there is a direct correlation.

 

I did it from the time they were mobile. It was typically no longer necessary by the time they were about 8.

 

The vast majority of spankings I have administered have been a single, swift butt swat. Occasionally a rapid-fire spanking. Never an imblement. I just don't have that in me.

From age 9-15, I agree spanking is useless. Prior to that, though, I see it as being effective if done properly.

I agree spanking teenagers doesn't work that well today. We spanked our kids sparingly but as needed when they were younger and never really had a reason to later on.

 

The kids that need spanking are the 4-8 year old's that won't listen to their parents and don't know how to act out in public. If you spank in some manners when they are younger you don't have to worry about it when they are older.

Depends on the kid. I spanked my son, only a few times. It was the only thing that did work as everything that worked for his sister failed. Certainly wasn't overrated in our home. Never needed to spank between ages 9-15, because spanking got him in line.

 

Also, and this isn't directed at you PP92, a spanking or swats are completely different from beating a child. There is never a reason to beat a child.

 

Put in the I was spanked as a child and DID spank my child camp.

Have done the exact same thing with all 3 of "Daddy's Little Girls", but by the age of 8 or 9 they were not necessary anymore. I have had to "crack" them once or twice across the mouth since then because they have gotten flippant, hard enough to get their attention, but enough to harm them. I even made them eat soap once or twice, this was always fun. :lol2: I agree with lawildcat, these days taking phones, video games, TV, etc. seem to work spankings.......but a little pain to the "donkey" really gets ones attention.

Depends on the child. There are times when spanking does not work on some children. There are also times where the threat works better than the deed.

Depends on the kid. When I was 7 I told my dad a Polish joke that I learned at school. I still don't know if he thought the joke was funny but he took me to the bathroom, took off his belt and gave me a spanking. You know what I learned? Don't tell Polish jokes to dad because his sense of humor sucks.

I was spanked. Not often, and I can only remember one time where it might have went too far. I've never spanked my kids. I just can't justify doing something to a child as a form of discipline that could get me arrested if I did it to an adult. Imagine if your boss gave out spankings at work when you screwed up?? To me spanking only sends mixed messages. Big brother beats on little brother and then gets punished by Dad spanking him. Does that make any sense?? Or does it just tell a child it's ok to respond with violence when someone doesn't behave as you think they are supposed to?? Look at all the instances of domestic violence that occur today. Doesn't it make sense that much of this behavior is rooted in spanking?? Spanking to me seems like something that parents who use it as a form of discipline, use it more out of anger, and then justify it by saying its discipline. I'm sorry but The line between spanking and beating seems pretty fuzzy to me. Sure the degree is different, but in the end you are still causing physical pain to a child.
