Pretty simple and straightforward. Were you spanked, and would you spank your kids?

I was spanked or I should say I got whipped with a belt. I found that time outs worked much better with my kids. Hell, I even made them eat soap once or twice. I'm sure that if I had ever spanked my daughter, she would have laughed and said, "is that all you got?" Yeah, she's a lot like me. These days, taking phones, video games, TV, etc. seems to work much better than spankings.

I was spanked, and therefore learned and behaved. I have spanked all 4 of mine, including the little girl. I have 4 very good children, comparatively speaking. I believe there is a direct correlation.

 

I did it from the time they were mobile. It was typically no longer necessary by the time they were about 8.

 

The vast majority of spankings I have administered have been a single, swift butt swat. Occasionally a rapid-fire spanking. Never an imblement. I just don't have that in me.

There is a huge difference between giving a swat on the rear end and getting whooped.

I will say, I was a total wuss as a kid. If my dad looked at me like he was angry, I'd be in tears.

Mom whipped me once a week. I love my Mom, but I wasn't afraid of her swats at all.

 

Dad whipped me one time in my entire life, at about age 8. He took a nap and I broke the big rule of, "Don't leave our yard." Got caught & he gave me 3 pretty good swats. But he never had to do it again.

My parents threatened it, but looking through the foggy glass of time I don't remember them ever going through with it. I was a well behaved kid. I don't plan to adopt the practice.

The thought of spanking makes me laugh. I don't know why. When a kid I was fiercely afraid of it, but now I think it's hilarious.

 

Anyway, I'm a woman. I was spanked. I think maybe the belt too at one point but I've blocked it out of my mind . NOTE: It was warranted. I never ever got an undeserved spanking.

 

I, too, think there is a coorelation between well behaved children compartively to others their age, and spanking. I will spank my children if it's necessary.

 

From my memory, spanking, eating soap, and taking away my lifelines have all been effective punishments. If my mom or dad took away my AIM when I was in middle school or HS I lost it.

Got swatted with a switch or flyswatter back in the day.

 

The rare barehanded swat to the bottom of the kids (maybe 3 or 4 times over the course of childhood) was all I ever felt the need to apply as a parent.

Wooden spoon, picked my own branch, flyswatter, open hand. Pretty much ran the gamut. Didn't happen a whole lot as I usually learned pretty quickly not to do whatever again, but did enough stupid stuff to get a few. It worked with me...however it did NOT work with my sister. She'd get spanked, do the same thing the next day. Mom told me later on as I was older that she got to the point after spanking my sister one day and seeing what she had done to her, she scared herself and decided she needed to change her punishment techniques and not spank/whoop her any more. It wasn't working anyway, it wasn't helping correct bad behavior, so she had to change her game plan and went to a more 'reward good behavior" type of system. Well I don't think that ended up working much either. Sister was just a knothead in those days.

 

Point being...spanking works with some kids and you get the desired result...some kids, though, it doesn't work with. Do I think SOME kids need to be spanked? Absolutely. Others...maybe not so much.
