Spanking is overrated and it doesn't work. I was spanked with a belt from 9-15 years of age. It stopped nothing. I'd rather be spanked than be grounded from going to my buddy's house after school to play G.I. Joe and Transformers or from going to the game Friday night. Grounding me caught my attention. Spankings weren't squat.

When I need to get my kid's attention we took away the computer, phone or TV or we grounded them. Works everytime. I was way worse as a child than any of my kids.

But what if you have a child who doesn't listen. You ground them they ignore it. You say no tv or tablet they ignore it. We act like all kids listen to these punishments when it's far from the case.

I don't think punishment is one size fits all. I was spanked as a child and it worked. For some spanking may not. I just no from experience with my peers normally the kids who weren't spanked were normally the bratty ones though.

I was able to raise my kids without using corporal punishment.
No offense, but that sounds condescending. Not saying you intended it that way, just kind of comes across that way. As has been said by many, not all kids respond to the same methods. My daughter never needed to be spanked, my son did. Taking things away, time outs, grounding, etc didn't work with him. Corporal punishment did.

I don't know how you could take that as condescension. I simply was answering one part of the question. I'm not saying anything other than what I was able to do.

The use of the word able is what did it for me. Makes it sound as though if others only tried, they could have done it your way too. Again, please don't take it as I think you meant to sound that way, it's just when you read something rather than hear it, it can come across differently than intended. Since I know you pretty well, I really don't think you meant it that way, but reading it, it just looks that way. Again, no offense.

I don't know what else I can say. I speak only for myself, to answer a question. Nothing more, nothing less. But, by all means, tear apart my words.

Also, I am not willing to discuss my reasons. But I have good reasons for NOT choosing corporal punishment when disciplining my kids. And I will freely admit that while I was able to avoid it, it doesn't mean my kids were little angels or anything. We had some rough times. But again, I was able to keep my promise to myself and avoid using corporal punishment.

Okay. Perhaps you missed the part where I said I don't think you meant to sound that way, it just came across that way. Or that when something is written/typed rather than heard, it's easily taken another way. You're getting a bit too defensive when I don't think you need to.

Pressure points seem to work. My daughter just needs to be put in her room alone and it was over. Never spanked my kids, yet. That being said, everything depends depends on kids, parents, and situations.

You said I was condescending. I take objection to that.

If your having to do it more than a few times, is it really working?

What if a parent holds a child's hand close to a hot burner on a stove. Not burning the child just close enough to the heat that they can feel pain...

How about holding the child's head under water for 5-10 seconds. Not long enough to seriously injure the child, but long enough to put the fear of God in them!

Would these two examples be accepted by parents who choose to use a belt,a switch or a paddle for disciplining their children?

I know these examples are extreme, but how are they any different than using traditional corporal punishment?

No, I said your comment sounded condescending and added

Honestly, I couldn't have been more clear, but then you made my case for me. You see how easily something can come across differently than intended.

So it's not what she typed, but the way she typed it?!

One key point here: While I did spank both of my kids, I really tried not to do it in anger. i.e. they disobeyed, I got mad, and then whipped them. Instead I would tell them at the time of the infraction that they would be getting a spanking later that day and would follow through with it every time. Waiting 5 hours for a spanking you know is coming is a HUGE deterrent for a 6 or 7 year old.
