"Off The Beaten Path" Tourist Stops

^ Reminds me of the "Wye Oak" on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Blew over in a storm in 2002. We stopped a couple of times on the way to visit relatives.

I know of it, but I never saw it. Interestingly enough, one of my favorite bands is called Wye Oak. They're from Baltimore. Saw them live a couple of weeks ago.

And home of a certain "Awesome Bill."

They had a diner in town that was full of Bill Elliot memorabilia. Pretty neat

It wasn't too terribly "off the beaten path", but on vacation down in Kiawah near Charleston, SC about a month ago, I took a detour to see the Angel Oak. It's a live oak tree (that's a "live oak" - a species of tree) believed to be somewhere around 600 years old, although depending on who you talk to, you could be told it's upwards of 1,500 years old. The tree is 66 feet tall, the trunk is 28 feet in circumference, and the canopy shades 17,200 square feet of forest floor. It has individual limbs that are 11 feet in circumference and upwards of 190 feet in length. Definitely something to behold.

Saw that a few years ago. It is something to see.

Everyone goes to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. I recommend driving over the mountain and checking out Cherokee, too.

If you're heading south on 75, you can see Ruby Falls. I've never been there but there are about 600 signs reminding you to stop so it must be great. Rock City too.

Chattanooga and the surrounding area has some nice sites to visit. There's the steepest train track in the world that has a chain driven mechanism that takes the train from the valley area to the top of Lookout Mountain. Once you're at the top you can visit the museum and battlegrounds of the famous Civil War battled nicknamed "Battle of the Clouds" because part of it was fought on the mountain during a fog. The opposing forces would sometimes be within yards of one another and wouldn't even know it.

Also in the area is Ruby Falls, a subterranean water fall. Rock City is another site worth seeing, and great for kids. It is a rock flower garden that uses the rocky terrain and small caverns to create a fairyland scene. And nearby is the observation area that you can (supposedly) see 7 states with the aid of a scope.

Also, there's two giant aquariums in Chattanooga, one for fresh water aquatic life, and one for seawater.

Chattanooga was a nice weekend visit for my bunch. We really liked it.

Went to Siesta Key a few years back and ventured to a FL state park called Myakka River State park. They have an airboat tour and a canopy walk that were pretty cool. Alligators were everywhere.

Used to go camping there. An adventure, to say the least. The raccoons were the least of your worries when considering critters that could get in the tent with you. Black bears can work a zipper, too, or just eat though.

This is no surprise coming from you. :)

Taking the family to Gatlinburg in month. In the past we drove through Cherokee to go to Asheville and we didn't really notice anything. Can you recommend what we should see?

Used to go to Marineland when visiting my parents in St. Augustine

Been to St Augustine twice. We really liked going over to Fort Matanzas. Boat takes you over to a guided tour of the Fort. And the best thing about it is that it is free!

You posted this a couple of times so I have to ask, why did you go? And would you go again?

I think we all have joked about it, but when it comes right down to it I really have no interest in going to any public place where everyone is naked. Especially the beach where there are a few places I want to protect from the elements.

So what is the allure? Is it the novelty of it? Exhibitionist or Voyeur? Some other reason?

No tan lines.
