Final from 1998. Up by 4 TD's, TD's #5 and #6 were 76 and 62 yard bombs respectively. Up 6TD's, Highlands was still passing with Lorenzen still in. It was 68-0 before CC scored. (I don't know what the running clock rules were back then)

 

IMO, this goes beyond bad sportsmanship. Is/was anyone connected with Highlands even remotely embarrassed by this game? Is the head coach embarrassed now that some time has passed?

 

You hear about the great Highlands tradition, and community support, and all that. And winning certainly is the answer to all your problems. But IMO it is completely wrong that a coach, and his staff, and the school, could have let it get this much out of control, and speaks volumes to the character of all involved.

When I was a freshman at Boyle, Harrodsburg beat us 60-0 behind the running go Gus Parks n Nicky Yeast. When we recovered a fumble inside their ten late in the game the Pioneers rushed out their first string defense to stop us. I'm proud to say we did not allow Harrodsburg to score again the next three years. (17-0, 6-0, 27-0). That's how you answer those kind of games.

So, when up by 6TD's, leave your starting QB in and continue to throw deep. Got it. Stay classy.

Lord knows if Boyle County is up 35-0 and throws a pass the sportsmanship police come out of the woodworks. Hell, they sportsmanship cops came out when BG put 91 up on Logan County last year and the starters only played a half in that game. Had this Highlands game taken place last year and they were throwing the ball that late in the game with the starters in.....wow. BGP would have exploded.

 

I ain't mad at Glyde for bringing it up now 16 years later but I have always been an advocate of score as much as you can as much as you want so I have no issue with this at all.
