August 4, 201412 yr Author All runs after halftime. That should be acceptable for everyone. So it's 42-0, starting QB Lorenzen still in, and still throwing, but because it's not halftime yet, that's completely acceptable. Be interesting to see if that same scenario plays out this year in a local game and everyone finds that OK.
August 4, 201412 yr Final from 1998. Up by 4 TD's, TD's #5 and #6 were 76 and 62 yard bombs respectively. Up 6TD's, Highlands was still passing with Lorenzen still in. It was 68-0 before CC scored. (I don't know what the running clock rules were back then) IMO, this goes beyond bad sportsmanship. Is/was anyone connected with Highlands even remotely embarrassed by this game? Is the head coach embarrassed now that some time has passed? You hear about the great Highlands tradition, and community support, and all that. And winning certainly is the answer to all your problems. But IMO it is completely wrong that a coach, and his staff, and the school, could have let it get this much out of control, and speaks volumes to the character of all involved. Not sure why I'm even responding to this except to add some perspective. According to the game summary that was posted Campbell County 0 0 0 12 - 12 Highlands 28 27 13 20 - 88 H - Ulbricht 80 kickoff return (Jones kick) H - Smith 65 pass from Lorenzen (Jones kick) H - Gibson 4 run (Jones kick) H - Hamblin 25 pass from Lorenzen (Jones kick) H - Ulbricht 76 pass from Lorenzen (Jones kick) H - Hasson 62 pass from Lorenzen (Jones kick) H - Smith 34 pass from Lorenzen (kick failed) H - Gibson 12 run (Jones kick) H - Zenni 61 run (Jones kick) H - Zenni 1 run (kick failed) CC - Applegate 8 run (kick failed) H - Fennell 22 run (Malone kick) H - Behymer 35 interception return (Malone kick) CC - Mason 94 kickoff return (kick failed) H - Bonomini 14 run (kick failed) Records: H 2-0, CC 1-1 TD's 5 and 6 were passes - in the first half. TD's 8, 9, 10, and 12 were runs. The Camels weren't stopping that either. I remember the game well. It was one of the first games coached by Corsen at CCHS. He came from Princeton in Cincinnati and went to a two platoon system. As we have seen recently, teams that try to institute a platoon system that do not have enough good players will struggle. Campbell had a few really nice players on that team (Dunn and Honaker come to mind) but in no way were ready to platoon. The Camels had JV kids starting against a state champion caliber team. A recipe for disaster - which it was.

Be interesting to see if that same scenario plays out this year in a local game and everyone finds that OK. Yes. Perfectly acceptable to me. BG did that last year against Logan County. We have these discussions every year in the football forum when district play starts and the powerhouse teams are forced to play district teams that simply can't hang with their JV teams. Just the way it is. When the whole team works all week long in practice I feel like the normal starters should at least get to play a full half at full throttle and a full playbook regardless of the score.

Hate me all you want, but I don't feel bad at all. Big props to CCHS that year to step up and play us. Can't wait to open the season in A-town this year and hopefully see a great game! Go Birds! :angrybird12:
August 4, 201412 yr So it's 42-0, starting QB Lorenzen still in, and still throwing, but because it's not halftime yet, that's completely acceptable. Correct. Be better...
August 4, 201412 yr It is pretty simple. If I put up a 50 burger at half, that's on you. Next topic...

If that's the unwritten rule, then so be it. My respect for Trinity grows every day. They play only the bare minimum of district games and the majority of the schedule is out of state in an attempt to avoid these types of games.
August 4, 201412 yr If you look at some of the names of players on that roster whom do not appear in the box score it shows just how much the dogs were called off. The backup QB on that team was sophomore Gino Gudugli. Other Sophomores included future All American Brent Grover who was the backup tight end, and two time all state and Mr.Football runner up Brett Hamblin at WR. I remember leaving that game and thinking Highlands had done a good job trying to keep the score down. Guys played and got touches on the ball that did not even start JV games. One guy scored a touchdown on what may have been his only varsity touch of the season. Every kid on the roster played and played a lot. There is no shame in this game, highlands could easily have scored 100 even playing backups the second half. With starters it would have been much worse. As another poster stated CC was starting guys who were not ready. That, coupled with the talent HHS had in those three classes made for a horrible mismatch. Sometimes that happens. It certainly was not the fault of the HHS coach as he did everything in his power to keep it respectable.

A recipe for disaster - which it was. You must not remember it too well. Mark Goetz was the coach of Campbell co. that year. Mark Goetz probably wishes people would forget. He got pounded by Highlands so much he got a job there. Lets just hope for Highlands sake he doesn't ever coach there. Dont believe me, check the khsaa scoreboard again. He was the coach.

There's a statute of limitations regarding character? sportsmanship? I don't know that it's defined, but it seems awful random 16 years after the fact. Hell, the head coach ain't even the same anymore. Given how the details are changing on you — where did that extra 26 points of second-half pass production go? — it sounds like your internal burning kind of got out of control over these past 16 years, with some neighborhoods catching flame where they might not have actually done so in realityland.

They play only the bare minimum of district games and the majority of the schedule is out of state in an attempt to avoid these types of games. Trinity is in a super district. Highlands, BG and others aren't that lucky. Rarely will you see a powerhouse schedule a non district opponent that they would defeat 88-12.
August 4, 201412 yr Maybe its the former coach or players still feeling the effects of that massacre every fall!! Post traumatic stress!
