Highlands 88 Campbell County 12

Featured Replies

If that's the unwritten rule, then so be it. My respect for Trinity grows every day. They play only the bare minimum of district games and the majority of the schedule is out of state in an attempt to avoid these types of games.

Glyde, you do know that HHS vs. CCHS used to be an annual rivalry game. I think both teams hoped at that time that that would be the case again. Highlands happened to be a national contender and on the front end of a three year state championship run. A team that put 55 points on eventual 4A state champion Male one week prior.

CC is looking to get back to that by scheduling their neighbor and using them as a measuring stick for where they need to be to get to their ultimate goals. Being maybe the largest school in NKY, they should be scheduling and competing with the top teams in the area. Back then it didn't work out. Hopefully those days are past and CC has 'raised the bar' to the point where all of the future games are competitive.

Hate me all you want, but I don't feel bad at all. Big props to CCHS that year to step up and play us. Can't wait to open the season in A-town this year and hopefully see a great game! Go Birds! :angrybird12:

Who is this "us" you reference? NCC, Brossart, Highlands or are you referencing an intra squad scrimmage CCHS vs. CCHS?

You have kids littered throughout the county!

I was really hoping this thread was started by Bluto.

Far be it from me to threadjack.

But some would say that T is forced to play so many OOS games because they have tremendous difficulty getting anyone from the Commonwealth to play them.

And yes - any score before halftime is fair game. Call off the dogs at the break.

I wonder if there is some Cumberland University fan somewhere that still burns inside about Georgia Tech and 1916? :D

I disagree. You call off the dogs after your offense and defense get one series each in the second half and you play to score and stop the other team. Games like this are unfortunate, but you have to look long term. I want my guys to get in the habit of starting the 2nd half strong so that they are ready when it is a tighter game.

Thankfully, we are only a 2 school household this year, NCC and Brossart, but you know I'm always a Cake Eater, first and foremost! :thumb:

Serious question. Lets say Team A is beating Team B by almost 70 points will about a quarter left to play. Team A is better at almost every single position and their freshman could probably beat Team B. Team A is scoring at will and there is nothing Team B to do to stop them. They can not even stop little draws up the middle. If you are Team B, do you want Team A to start taking a knee with almost a quarter left to play? Or do you want to actually play the game?

We've had this discussion before.

The dominant team taking a knee is much more disrespectful than running a play, IMHO.

You must not remember it too well. Mark Goetz was the coach of Campbell co. that year. Mark Goetz probably wishes people would forget. He got pounded by Highlands so much he got a job there. Lets just hope for Highlands sake he doesn't ever coach there. Dont believe me, check the khsaa scoreboard again. He was the coach.

Not only don't I believe you - I know who was the coach and the situation. Check any scoreboard you want. It was Corsen's first season - Goetz left to become Asst Principal at Newport in 1998.

Maybe you need to check facts before not only posting erroneous information but also hating on people. Goetz's teams played the Birds pretty tough on several occasions - including the year prior when the Birds scored on a kickoff return with 3 minutes left to eek out a 25-19 victory.

Like I said earlier, this score was a function of Corsen's two platoon system at a school not ready to platoon. The Camels were completely overmatched with the kids they put on the field.

I think you play all the time, taking a knee is worse. But I also think you pull your starters and stop throwing. Highlands did both the second half. They clearly did not the first half, even with a 6 TD lead in the 2nd quarter against a completely over-matched opponent. If a visiting team tried this in some HS stadiums, there would be fights in the stands and parking lot.

A lot of things came out of this game. First, this was a continuation of the previous year where Highlands was accused to running it up on SK when they threw a 7 yard hitch to open the second half. Stegman turned it into a 70 yard TD. Lorenzon broke 2K during the regular season (which at that time was unheard of up here) and Mueller was seen as a guy who would show up other coaches in an effort to reach statistical goals. The next season, Mueller was seen as taking "rubbing it in" to a new level. He valued the breaking of records and achieveing National recognition at the cost of sportsmanship. That 1998 team ran roughshod over teams and the "running up the score" grumbling could be heard all through NKY. After this, Corson and quite a few other coaches heavily opposed Mueller. He was not well liked by many of the old school coaches.

After looking back, you come to see what was going on. This wasn't Matney trying to set records in the middle of blow outs. This was a coach who was ahead of the curve when it came to spreading the field and throwing the ball. Couple that w/ a run of DI athletes that were some of the best players that this area has ever seen and he couldn't help but blow out teams that tried to stop them with a base 5-3 or 4-4 defense. That season hurt Mueller's reputation for about 5 seasons, and many guys still don't like him. However, it helped the overall strength of NKY football immeasurably. Coaching Jared during the East/West All-Star game completely changed NewCath's philosophy offensively. It paved the way for their run of success. Other teams started copying their sacraficing of size for speed. You look back now and you realize that that was just a very special group and much of the problems back then weren't Mueller's, but coaches unable or willing to adapt to what he was doing.

Good Post. You're right. Competition breads success.
