That was a very stout team and the Mayfield win shouldn't come as a big surprise looking at their schedule in hindsight that year:

 

They defeated Clintwood, VA (crushed them) who was the Virginia A Runner-Up

They destroyed a LCA team who reached the 2A Regional Finals

They lost 14-0 to a Somerset team who reached the 2A Semi-Finals

They lost by 1 to a Breathitt County team who finished 13-1 and was probably a Top 5 3A team

In the playoffs they beat a Pikeville team who entered 11-2...their two losses came to the North Carolina A State Champ and the AAA Runner-Up

 

I remembered being surprised that Hazard cleaned Mayfield's clock like they did... even with Jackson injured. I don't think Mayfield played anywhere near their best game aside from the injury, but to me the way Hazard obliterated the Cards on both sides of the ball all night it was clear they were the better team and the best 1A team of 2011.

The score was 10-6 Hazard at the half and stayed that way until a few minutes to go in the 3rd. Jackson had 13 carries for 31 yards, I never saw him play a game like that and he probably should not have played. I gave and give Hazard it's due and they won and are the 2011 1A state champions and that's all that needs to be said....

LCA in 09 and Hazard in 11 both had skill guys that weren't intimidated or overmatched by Mayfield athletes and ran balanced offenses. The #1 reason they both beat Mayfield was that they won the battle in the trenches on both sides to go with that skill. Williamsburg had some skill and no line play. Fairview had line play and lost the skill battle.

Ok. I saw the game and Ill say it. They were lucky they caught Mayfield banged up from the previous week. There were more injuries tha

(Fat fingers) than Jackson in that game. I watched Mayfield all year and they were train wrecking teams. Hazard caught a banged up team BUT also caught a Mayfield team that came in overly confident and got beat...thats the way you would have to catch that team to beat them that year.

snake, I don't blame you for jumping in there. Hazard was a deserving champion, but let's not let it go too far the other way. As I was watching, I said after the first quarter that the J. Jackson playing in that game was a player I hadn't seen in four years. He was clearly playing injured and was not the same player. And let there be no doubt, he was a player that by himself could carry a team to victory when healthy.

I already have guru. Its up to them now to make their accounts. But I already know most of there thoughts I just want to hear others from across the state. But I would like to add that Hazard has been to the title game 3 years 08,10,and 11. Two times they where very competitive and came nearly close to winning in 08 if they just had more time because Hazard beat up on Beechwood in that game but a horrible 1st half put them in a bad hole to come out of. Hazard ended up losing 14 to 7 and I would be willing to bet that Beechwood knew hazard came to play that game. In 2010 Hazard just had to many turnovers in that game and Mayfield capalized on all of them. Hazard moved the ball well but couldn't hold onto it to do any damage and by the time hazard corrected there mistakes the ball game was over. I really don't care what most people say but everyone underestimated hazard and give them little to no credit and was basing how they played the year before in the game and was going ahead and already crowning themselves 1A champs. The 2010 was very young as well but hard work and dedication payed off.

^ I don't think anyone ever underestimates another team in a championship game. Mayfield was ready to play and did not underestimate Hazard. They didn't get beat because they weren't ready or underestimated Hazard.

I thought Hazard was a solid champ. They won that game in the trenches, dominating the line play against Mayfield. When you can do that, you will win a lot of games.

Hazard was especially impressive on defense.

Yes, Jackson was hampered a bit with the torn miniscus but he still played well on defense.

 

I give the Bulldogs their due credit, I think they deserve it.

Best way I can convey it: The best team does not always win. That is a fact when it comes to sports. However, Hazard's victory was not some kind of fluke. This was not Chaminade over Virginia.
