Solid Class 1A Champ or lucky Mayfield was used up the week before against Beechwood?

I will give my opinion later.

They were the best Class 1A team in the state. I don't care what injuries the other teams in the state had, I'm sure Hazard had some bumps in the road as well. Claiming you lost because of injuries is just excuse making, everyone has injuries and problems by the time the playoffs start.

I don't think anyone from Mayfield looks at it like injuries were the only cause of that defeat. Injuries just made it where Mayfield wasn't at it's best. Hazard was the Champ from 2011, fair and square.

Hazard had a really good football team. They were battle tested and proved it by beating Mayfield. They gave Beechwood all they wanted in 2008.

Hazard 2011 was an excellent team I knew they was good but to be honest I really didn't think they could win it because of how many points Pikeville scored in the last playoff game before state. But Hazard very well could of been undefeated as they lost to Somerset 14-0 and Breathitt Co 35 to 34. Hazard move the ball well in the Somerset game and lived in the redzone but never could score. Breathitt County I wasn't in attendance but some questionable calls from what I heard made the out come of the game but its still a loss and Hazard learned from there loss and made it count and never learned to be in a panic. The past two year hazard teams have been very good but in my opinion they have lacked Physicality that the teams of the past have had. Last years team who lost to Williamsburg got better as the season progressed but having a freshmen under center in a playoff game such as that is somewhat a little too much pressure and he folded. But I expect good things from the young man this year and the coaching staff is amazed at how one year under his belt has helped him. Tuesday they will be at EKU for 7 on 7 action.

Well done on starting this thread Guru. I do think that the 2011 Hazard team has not received their just due. Partially because on this board you have to speak up in support of a team. Hazard has not had enough people on here telling their story. I think that, combined with the absolute fact that Beechwood and Mayfield both had totally loaded teams, led to Hazard not getting much recognition. Starting the season 2-2 probably also took people's attention from them, even though the two losses were against two very good higher class teams.

Looking at it from afar, I see Hazard as a very deserving state champion. They dominated their competition and they controlled the championship game versus Mayfield. In many ways, it is unfortunate for both Mayfield and Hazard that the key injuries happened to Jackson and the other Mayfield players. For Mayfield, obviously it made them a lesser team in the title game. For Hazard, it led to them having these questions about how good they really were. For that reason, I always say I want to play a team at full strength. I know many will disagree and say I will take that championship trophy any way I can get it. For me, I want to prove it versus the best so no one has any doubt who the best was. Hazard 2011 is proof to me that it is better to play against an opponent at full strength so there is no one who questions who was the best.

I agree. Hazard had there starting defensive end out all season and a few lineman. The defensive end I don't think they played in that title game either. Hazard capalized on 5 turnovers in that game. Bj combs missed an interception in the first quarter that may of lead to another touchdown or at least a field goal. Hazard had a touchdown called back on a lousy block in the back that really wasn't needed otherwise the score could of been more than what the final score was.

Also in 2009 when mayfield played LCA in the finals and was dominated. Do we say the week before when LCA played Hazard was the actual title game like people said the beechwood and mayfield game before state in 2011

Hazard had a VERY Solid Football team in 2011 and they have the rings to prove it. I do think they were maybe looked past a little bit in the finals, but I don't want to take anything away from them as they had a really good team.

I agree Hazard was the best team that year. Defensively very solid and proved that many times in 2011.

I watched a little video on wazoo sports, I dont think Mayfield should take Hazard for granted. They dont look like a bad team at all.

Snake the quote above is yours from before the game in the Prediction Thread, it definitely seems as if you saw on film they were pretty good. Seems like most of the rest of BGPers didn't give Hazard a chance, the vote back then was 53-2 Mayfield!!!

Everybody should agree with what I say then....just kidding.

Me too.

They were a quality team that won the title, fair and square. There defense was a lot better in 11 than in 10 and they returned the majority of there line and skilled players from the prior year. I actually thought they were a lot better in 2010 than what they showed. In 10, they couldn't hold onto the ball and there Dline was dominated. In 2011, there Dline dominated and the turnovers went the other way. I think the 2011 version of the Bulldogs were the states best 1a team that year, Mayfield a close 2nd and Beechwood a solid 3rd.
