Its pretty simple really, take out Hazards passing game, the QB and the defense and then see how well they do. Hazard said they stopped Jackson, but he was just standing out there and everybody on the Mayfield side knew it. Mayfield played teams as good as Hazard and bigger all season, you can't tell me Jackson wouldn't have broken some tackles and had some big gains that day had he been 100%.

 

Once again Mayfield fans continue to use this excuse which makes absolutely no sense.

 

If Jackson was essentially useless as a Running Back because he was so hurt why did the Mayfield coaching staff even put him on the field? Secondly, why keep him on the field when you are losing?

 

Mayfield fans love to crow every year about how much depth they have and how guys are always stepping in and replacing others.... did Mayfield simply not have anyone better on their roster than a Jackson who apparently had one foot in the grave?

 

Either Mayfield wasn't as good of a team as people think that year and Hazard was truly better... or the Mayfield coaching staff cost their program a State Title. Which is it?

ATLCat ... as a Beechwood fan who saw Jackson first hand 4 straight years and watched the state title game, trust me, you did not see Jonathon Jackson in that game. A healthy Jackson is a HUGE difference in that game like he was in every game he played in during his career up to that one.

 

As to why Mayfield didn't play someone else, I don't know. But ... how do you sit down one of the greatest players in school history who has led your team for four years and to two state titles?

 

I believe I have posted this before, but I will post it again, this game is a perfect example of why I prefer to always play a team with all its players healthy. Here we are debating this a couple years later. If Jackson had been healthy and Hazard won, there would be no debate.

Thank you, if you had watched him as long as we have, you know he can carry a team anywhere. I think Mayfield could have done some different things in that game but we all knew that Jonathan was good for 2-3 TD's a game. If you took out Combs for Hazard it would have been a different outcome, you can't deny that.

In the running back position that year, Mayfield did not have anyone better in that position. And Beechwood was really good that year, you can't tell me Hazard was head and shoulders better than Beechwood that year. Putting a player like Jackson out on the field is an intimidation factor at first, but then I agree it gets stupid to leave him out there and he isn't doing anything, but he was a leader the moment he stepped into that school as a freshman, so you can't ignore that, especially in a championship game.

Is NewCath able to say that they lost to Danville in '01 b/c their starting LT and best lineman was out from an injury in the Semi's and that they lost their top receiver at the beginning of the Finals? I don't get the injury thing. It is a team sport, the best team wins. Injuries to key players are a part of it and can have a huge impact. However, when that happens, then you get to see what the TEAM looked like.

When I walked onto the field and looked at Hazard's team I thought one thing, Manstown. I thought they have to win, then I remembered they were playing Mayfield and no one in Class A beats Mayfield.

 

Frankly, I thought 2011 Hazard was one of the baddest you know what Class A teams I have ever seen play.

When the little Eastern Kentucky Schools beat the Northern or Western schools we have to come up with some excuse, right?

 

You lost period. Hazard was the better team and won.

 

As a whole the Eastern Kentucky schools are usually down in football, but once in a while you have that talented group that comes through that is a special team. This was one of those cases. Hazard had one heck of a team that year. The scoreboard also said Hazard was the better team. Make any excuse you want that's what the losing team does. Mayfield is just not usually accustomed to doing that, but for 2011 they get to do that.

My opinion, Hazard was better that day..................not that season. That's all that matters in sports though, right?

I believe Hazard started out being Clintwood, Virginia in the opening game of the season. Hazard won the single A championship in Kentucky and Clintwood recovered to win the Single A Championship in Virginia. Clintwood's coach, who I use to work with, still talks about the overall team speed of Hazard.
