10-15 years away at the earliest. Danville will have to go broke first in order for it to happen and I don't think Danville will ever go broke any time soon.

I think most counties have intense Cross-Town Rivalries...but when both teams are at or near the top of the Region is when those are at the best!

 

Boyle County/Danville in the 12th Region final would be awesome. It would be more intense than the football game IMO. Danville basketball seems to get more fan suport than football these days.

Can someone on here go in to detail about the Mercer Co. - Harrodsburg rivalry before they consolidated? I didn't get the chance to witness it for myself but I've heard a few stories. Sounds like it was pretty intense. And I think the last season they existed both of their matchups were 1 point wins by Mercer.

Clay County - Corbin (long, bitter rivalry; fights at games & didn't schedule each other for awhile IIRC)

North Laurel - South Laurel (fairly new crosstown rivalry)

Corbin - Harlan (early/mid 90's when both were really good)

Clay County - Harlan (early/mid 90's when both were really good)

Knox Central - Barbourville (underrated but has had some wild moments)

 

 

14th:

Hazard - Perry County Central (see Clay County-Corbin)

Knott County Central - PCC/Hazard (recent years)

 

 

15th:

Johnson Central - Paintsville* (maybe one of the biggest in the State)

 

 

16th:

Ashland Blazer - Boyd County

East Carter - West Carter

 

 

Of them all, I think Paintsville vs. Johnson Central probably gets the nod because there's so much involved in it and there's so much carryover to other sports.

Cov. Cath. - Highlands. (Over the past 10 years, the basketball rivalry has been every bit as good as the football rivalry.)

Knott and Perry is really intense also. The mountain teams go at it.

 

 

Pales in comparsion with Perry Central-Hazard. That game is always crazy--- leading up to it, during it, and on the message boards afterwards.

In my neck of the woods Estill-Powell have a very intense rivalry. Nothing on the level of a Perry-Hazard but still a good rivalry. Both schools are almost identical in size (slightly over 700) and are located about 20 minutes from one another.

I do know they played in the 12th region finals in 2000 it was intense with mercer coming back from a 14 point half time deficit to win their third win region history

Who did Mercer play in 2000?

I used to love the rivalry that NCC and Highlands had on the hardwood. In the 80's and 90's it was fierce. Great games. Not so much anymore. Programs have gone in different directions.

Yeah, I bet that was intense. They still hate each other and Harrodsburg is extinct.

Garrard and Mercer used to be really big rivals when they were both in the 46th District. Each game typically included chippy players and fans "having words" if not more in the lobby or outside. In basketball, both rarely beat Harrodsburg so they were usually playing for the other spot in the region. But that rivalry cooled immensely when Mercer and Harrodsburg consolidated and then Garrard switched districts. Now it is just another game.
