You either choose not to talk about those issues, or you do it respectfully in the good spirit of debate, and know when to end an argument before it ends a friendship. Simple as that, right?

All of my real life friends know that I think anyone who supports DEM OR REP, are a big mac short of a value meal and we are still friends I say yes you can.

I thought of this thread as my very good friend and I were enjoying a summer evening watching our kids' swim. Somehow the president's name came up in the conversation, and I remembered that we did not vote the same way. We laughed about it.

 

Good friends are hard to find. I would never let politics get in the way.

Yes I can be friends, my best friend is a Republican and I am a Dem. My golf outing group of 16 has 14 Rep to 2 Dems. We have good natured fun, but never let it get in the way of our talking about just everything and having a great time.

 

The ObamaCare debates this year were special. Most of my extended family are Rep, but my close relatives are Dems.

 

Like Habib, I just don't understand why people can't respect others beliefs and move on. To me that is what this country was built on. Divergent thinking.

 

It is difficult on a site like this at times to disagree and not sound like you dislike the person you disagree with. I don't know most and am usually laughing or chuckling during those disagreements.

I very much agree.

 

I post a lot of stuff on here in large part because I enjoy the discussion and the disagreement to flesh out my thoughts on various matters. But as much as I disagree and argue with people I'd have a drink or meal with anyone here in a heartbeat. I like to think life is more than political bickering.

Someone who thinks they can't be friends with someone they disagree with politically is not someone that I want to be friends with---even if we do agree politically.

I agree. The thing is to be respectful of others' position and not come across as as terribly condescending. I often struggle with that because more than one ancestor bequeathed to me a sarcastic gene.

 

I think that if you are genuinely interested in at least listening to "the other side", it comes across in your posts.

I have friends - several reasonably close friends - who are absolutely convinced that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax. "I saw one of those girls with Obama afterwords and she was wearing the same dress. They just want to take all our guns." That is an exact quote from one of them.

 

Rather than simply say "Photoshop" (it wouldn't do any good), I deftly change the subject. Usually something like, "How about them 'Cats?" will do the trick.
