I don't post my political thoughts on facebook, but that's largely because I'm not genuinely friends with a lot of them and I'm certainly not close with the majority of them.

Heck - I even sat a couple of seats from the likes of Run to State at a BGP get-together and lived to tell the tale. For the life of me, I couldn't name one person on here that I wouldn't share a bag of popcorn with or get together over a beer.

 

There must be some important stuff besides political beliefs and affiliations that contribute significantly to a person's makeup.

 

When I took my pilgramage to a Highlands game I hung out with Run to State more than any other BGPer and I was sad the night ended. We had a great time watching Boyle run out of gas in the 3rd quarter. :lol2:

I've had someone quit being friends with me because I wouldn't vote for Obama. I'm a registered Republican but politically I most closely associated with a libertarian view point so it does allow for common ground somewhere with most people. I'm a pretty staunch fiscal conservative so I've got in some heated debates over economics with friends and is really the one true reason I can never vote democrat.

To answer my own question...yes I can, and I am. Heck, if I couldn't be friends with people who are essentially opposite of my political views...lets just say I'd be very very lonely in the office.

 

Now, for the most part none of us go around wearing of politics on our sleeves...we have our spirited debates every now and then, but we all know when to let it die and leave it alone. When it gets hard is having a person who turns everything to politics. You probably know a person like that. "Yep, man did I have a raging case of the runs this weekend, threw up a couple of times too". "Well Big V, you KNOW that just didn't happen to people before Bush II took office".:no: Those are the ones I just have to walk away from...both ways.

Why Facebook Is The Wrong Venue For Political Discussions

 

Interesting/relevant.

I rarely log into my Facebook account and when I do I never discuss politics. I have too many liberal friends and when you debate politics, much is lost when you do it on line because of the absence of body language.

 

As many here can attest, I enjoy arguing, so when I debate politics, I prefer to engage strangers in forums such as this one.

To answer the original question, yes, I have quite a few friends that are opposite of me politically.

Of course I could and do.

 

I think it may be a lawyer thing, but I don't know if I've ever met anyone who was exactly like me politically (though plenty who are very similar on major issues).

 

I have a lot of friends who are completely opposite of me politically though.

A couple of times as I got to know people and learned they are boisterous on the far right or on the far left with no chance of having an open mind about anything.... And it is 90% of what they wanted to talk about... I have walked away and become just friendly with them.

 

BGP is my political outlet. Discussions with my closest friends are usually on other, more enjoyable topics.

One of my good friends is an card carrying ACLU Liberal, we never let a moment pass that were aren't ripping on each other. Had a long time friend that I worked with that was nearly a complete opposite of me on every political position, I used to plan my breaks to discuss/argue politics with him.

 

But both of those guys would give me the shirt off of their back so to speak, as would I for them.

Come on, there are PLENTY of things to hate Randy for aside from his politics. I'm sure you'll come up with something.
