That said, I tend to float between left and right on a lot of issues so there's usually common ground somewhere.

 

You learn to restrict your conversations to things you can both be reasonable about.

Papa & PP92 are two of my best friends on BGP. I've had the pleasure of meeting both & consider both of them very good friends. I think that best answers the question.

I know of friendships that have been relatively lost because of this very thing. Someone posts all their political rants/diatribes/arguments on their facebook...someone "unfriends" them so they don't have to see all that stuff cause its almost all they post, person gets upset because they have been "unfriended", and so it goes. I don't mind and can actually enjoy a spirited political debate, but much like a very sweet, heavy dessert, it's best in very small doses.

 

Easy solution...Delete Facebook.

Come on, there are PLENTY of things to hate Randy for aside from his politics. I'm sure you'll come up with something.

This. The majority of the population considers themselves a D or an R. I tend to agree (and disagree) with both sides equally so it's not hard at all to find common ground.

 

Thought I have several friends who are pretty staunch libertarians as well.

If I can be best friends with a UNC fan, I can surely be friends with a Democrat!

I guess I'll be the turd in the punch bowl. If I know someone's politics before getting to really know them it can make it harder for me to become good friends with them if I disagree politically with them.

I would say the majority of my close friends are very, very politically different than me. I can't understand how people are incapable of seeing beyond someone else's political views and why you would seek out that kind of isolation.

I have cousins that are constantly posting their political views on FB. I don't care for that at all.

Yes. BELIEVE ME, I'm in the minority around here, being a commie pinko liberal (well, a liberal on social issues) person who struggles with issues of faith. And Randy Parker still calls me friend. I've watched his niece play ball and I believe he would do the same if my daughter was still in school.

Heck - I even sat a couple of seats from the likes of Run to State at a BGP get-together and lived to tell the tale. For the life of me, I couldn't name one person on here that I wouldn't share a bag of popcorn with or get together over a beer.

 

There must be some important stuff besides political beliefs and affiliations that contribute significantly to a person's makeup.

While many people here on BGP think they have me pegged, my beliefs are all across the board and depend on the issue. I also seek out people of opposite views because I feel like to support my own view, I have to know what drives the other person's views. So, yeah....I can be friends with just about anyone. There are very few people with whom I have NO common ground.

 

As a tangent, I don't post my political beliefs on Facebook or Twitter. I tend to skip over updates by friends that do, unless there happens to be an interesting article shared. But, Facebook (especially) is my friendly place.

I'm not sure I could tell you which way many of my friends lean.

I agree. You just don't talk politics or religion. It's something I learned early and it had served me well.
