Only a matter of time before it's the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, KC Chiefs. It's now only a matter of jumping on the band wagon and complaining about every name associated with a Indian pseudonym.

You must have special powers, because every time I use that word it gets flagged. But I agree. Thank God my people were immigrant scum so I don't have to be saddled with latent guilt about the Indians.

How long till fishermen/ sailors complain about the Seattle Mariners?

Team names are giving because of the positives associated with the nickname.

People are just going to have to get their creative juices flowing and come up with a nickname that doesn't outright offend any ethnic group of people.

It's not that hard.

Do you personally advocate that pp92 ? IMO that level of political correctness is total foolishness . We have great freedoms in our country , and the promise of never being offended isn't one of them . To name your team after any group is a huge compliment . Not some sort of jab or negative . I hate the direction our country is headed . Hate it .

I don't think Indians, Chiefs, Braves or Blackhawks is offensive but I do think the caricature of Chief Wahoo is offensive. Change logo and move on.

When's the last time someone called someone of Native American heritage "a redskin"?

"Hey, since you are a redskin, can you recommend any good books on redskin history?"

Again, this has nothing to do with the name. Chief Wahoo is a cartoonish, stereotypical portrayal of Native Americans. Has been and always will be offensive to Native Americans. It's not ok to dress up in black face, and this is the same thing. It's not so much the names that offend, it's the characterized portrayal that is the issue. Natives are and always have been portrayed as either cartoonish figures, or mad, mean angry savages. I'm not sure why so many people have trouble understanding this point, or why so many people feel like it's ok tell Native Americans what they should and shouldn't be offended by.

Chiefs, Braves, Warriors are all fine, and it's hard to argue that these names are offensive.

Yes I advocate that. I guarantee I am the most offensive person on this site. Guarantee it. At the same time I understand the need for common sense and decency as human beings. I feel like mascots named after Indians/Native Americans are a legitimate beef that needs to be addressed. Some people say Indians, Braves and Redskins are a compliment to that ethnicity. Some Indians/Native Americans say it isn't insulting. Other Indians/Native Americans say it is. I say why fight about it? Just change the name. It's sports and sports mascots shouldn't come close to being seen as an insult to others. I'll never understand why it is a right to be insulting when a simple name change ends any insults.

Should we not be striving to be the best human beings we can be?

I could be wrong here, as my native American history probably isn't up to par, but wasn't 'Redskin' a derogatory term to refer to native Americans?

I always thought so. I always thought it was akin to calling blacks 'darkies'.

Nobody would call a Native American a redskin to their face but they are a team name for a football team based in our national capitol? How about that irony?

I don't know how ironic it is. It's probably the perfect name considering the number of other things Washington has done over the years to crap all over those people.
