Native American groups want to retire Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo

Featured Replies

Has anyone suggested that it is against the law? My understanding is that the name Redskins can stay, but they would lose the trademarks rights.

I don't think the trademark ruling will stand. I'm not saying I'm for the team name. I just don't like the idea of the government trying to force a private company into the name change. I don't think that should be the job of the federal government. There are plenty of things I don't like but I also don't feel the government should play a hand in .

Redskins is obviously over the top mascot name. Who is to blame for allowing it to continue are the fans who continue to support the name. But if thousands of people want to continue to support this name with their money it is their right as an American to be a moron.

If there was a team name called the Black Skins, and the mascot was a guy in blackface? Come on, the Native Americans are no different, chief Wahoo and the Redskins are so racist it's kind of ridiculous. I think it's stupid it's was there in the first place.

My opinion, Chief Wahoo is a different animal than "Redskins".

I'm always going to call the NFL team from Washington the " redskins " . The Dallas Cowboys .. If the Cowboys complain are we going to change their name too ? a small group might think its offensive .

Apples and Oranges

That example isn't even in the same ballpark. While I guess Cowboys could be used in a negative way, it's certainly never been viewed at any point in time as universally derogatory. It's also never been used to describe an ethnic group. And Which side was generally portrayed as the bad guy in Cowboy-Indian stories?? I'd say Cowboys are for the most looked at pretty favorably and highly regarded, especially when compared to Indians. Wasn't it in many of the Cowboy stories where "the only good Indian is a dead Indian"?? Cowboys are a very bad example to use in this argument.

Also we need to stop with the small group stuff. There are over 3,000,000 people that identify themselves as Native American, and many, many more that have some connection by blood to Native Americans. How big does a group have to be in order for slurs and derogatory comments based on race to not be acceptable?? How does being "just a small group" make it ok??

And guess what, if the name changes, it won't be the end of the world. Do you still call the Washington Wizards, the Bullets? Or the Nationals the Expos?? If the name changes, most people will roll with the change.

Cmon now , dont suggest that on me , we are talking about sports mascots . Mascots chosen with pride and a positive image in mind . Not humans owning other humans .

Just pointing at that at one time 5% of the people were against slavery and 95% of the people were for it. Did that make it right?

Dallas Cowboys???? Come on now.

Dallas Rednecks? Offensive.

In 50 years -- 60's-70'-80's-90s and 2000-2010 how many of the 3 million complained about the Washington Redskins ? 100 ? 1000 ? it was a very very small group. If the term redskin is slung in a Native Americans face as an insult I'd say thats flat out wrong ... when the washington redskins play on sunday and use the term for the mascot , and totally celebrate and love their Redskins its my opinion they should be left alone by the federal govt. Its just too slippery a slope to keep telling private owned companies how they can operate if they are not breaking any laws .

no .

IF .. IF Cowboys can be used in a negative way ( as RJS suggested) then what number do we assign needs to be offended before we drag Jerry Jones into court and outlaw his trademark ? 1 ? 100 ? 25k ? Who decides ?

But it's not offensive so it doesn't matter. If it were the Dallas Redskins it would be te same as Washington

They celebrate the Natave American while being racist, kind of a euphemism if you ask me. Being called the Indians celebrates their culture, identifying them with the color of their skin does not.

I wonder what other minorities we can celebrate with otherwise demeaning terms as mascots?

I can buy that Loogy. Guess I'm not ready to evolve yet. Old White . Grump . :) ( in a bad mood today)
