I wasnt necessarily talking just about the Redskin name in washington . Just the general theme of any group that claims to be offended gets not only a seat at the table but America acts like they have the majority of seats at the table and sometimes they own the table . Society does need to be fair and sensitive to all minorities but we cant operate when the 0.5 % in telling the 99.5 % how to operate .

And that's the perfect litmus test. If you wouldn't feel comfortable using "Redskin" in a room full of Native Americans, it's probably not the right word to use as a team name. And again, as a group, considering the history, I think it's ok to give Native Americans a little leeway on this issue. And I'll say it again, why people feel the need to tell a group (one that many likely have no clue about their history, culture and tradition) what should or shouldn't be offensive is beyond me.

The organization was established in the 30's... It's naive to think that societal standards of today are the same as they were when the name was chosen.

But being fair does entail being sensitive to the thoughts others. Simply having the majority does not give anyone the right to be insensitive, disrespectful or rude to those in the minority, or tell those folks what the should and shouldn't feel.

Do you personally advocate that pp92 ? IMO that level of political correctness is total foolishness . We have great freedoms in our country , and the promise of never being offended isn't one of them . To name your team after any group is a huge compliment . Not some sort of jab or negative . I hate the direction our country is headed . Hate it .

 

Why is your idea of freedom that people need to silently accept things they find offensive or disagreeable, particularly when it comes to minorities? There's no "freedom" for you to not be made to feel uncomfortable, or to have your views on society permanently institutionalized, so why are they supposed to stop their criticism while you continue yours?

People are just going to have to get their creative juices flowing and come up with a nickname that doesn't outright offend any ethnic group of people.

Actually, it is. Look at some of the new franchise names in the big four pro sports since 1988. You get teams named after Disney movies. Or, you get cheesy, abstract crap such as "The Heat," or "The Magic." Of all the new franchise names since the big expansion wave in sports started in about 1988 (Hornets, right?), you could only truly say that the Colorado Rockies got it right. Everybody else whiffed, many of them badly.

It's not, and probably shouldn't be. And I don't think anyone is saying it should be illegal, or that something illegal has occurred. While being insensitive, disrespectful and rude isn't illegal, are those traits something we would want to encourage? Would you want your son or daughter to marry someone with those traits?? Don't you think that sometimes it just makes sense to do the right thing??

So, what are you complaining about, then? You just said that people are too politically correct and that their "freedoms" don't include a "promise of never being offended." I'm not sure what that means other than "stop complaining."

It doesn't appear he's going to. He doesn't have any right that protects him from criticism, either.

 

You can't complain that minorities are too sensitive these days all the while getting upset that you can't casually refer to minorities in a pejorative manner anymore without people judging your actions. It would seem that is an even greater level of sensitivity.
