Native American groups want to retire Cleveland Indians' Chief Wahoo

Featured Replies

And I'd agree. My only point is those are terms made up by others (specifically our Government)to label and identify (and I don't mean in a negative way) the group of people that occupied this land before the Europeans came. I don't think they are offensive, I'm just saying, that most Native Americans describe themselves and want to be recognized as members of their tribe first.

The government labels every group. I'm a Caucasian non-hispanic . We all have labels. I prefer to be just called American. It goes back to my argument in several other topics I hate that we identify anywhere based on our skin color it should be irrelevant at this point in time .

Agreed.

How do African Amercians think of being called that?

Being called what?

Being called what?

I was confused as well my only guess is "African Americans"

African Americans. I think being called Indians and African Americans is the same

I prefer black but I get why the politically correct term of African American is used. I was born in Houston, Texas. I don't feel like I qualify as an African American.

I'm always going to call the NFL team from Washington the " redskins " . The Dallas Cowboys .. If the Cowboys complain are we going to change their name too ? a small group might think its offensive .

If you met someone from the Souix tribe, would you refer to the to their face as a redskin?

No . I would call them by their name . Respectfully .

Yes I advocate that. I guarantee I am the most offensive person on this site. Guarantee it. At the same time I understand the need for common sense and decency as human beings. I feel like mascots named after Indians/Native Americans are a legitimate beef that needs to be addressed. Some people say Indians' date=' Braves and Redskins are a compliment to that ethnicity. Some Indians/Native Americans say it isn't insulting. Other Indians/Native Americans say it is. I say why fight about it? Just change the name. It's sports and sports mascots shouldn't come close to being seen as an insult to others. I'll never understand why it is a right to be insulting when a simple name change ends any insults. Should we not be striving to be the best human beings we can be?[/quote'] Hey now!
Actually' date=' it is. Look at some of the new franchise names in the big four pro sports since 1988. You get teams named after Disney movies. Or, you get cheesy, abstract crap such as "The Heat," or "The Magic." Of all the new franchise names since the big expansion wave in sports started in about 1988 (Hornets, right?), you could only truly say that the Colorado Rockies got it right. Everybody else whiffed, many of them badly.[/quote']Florida Marlins?
No . I would call them by their name . Respectfully .

If you wanted to ask them for the names of some historical references on their culture, would you feel comfortable using the word redskin?

Florida Marlins?

Yeah, after consideration, that one's pretty good. They and the Rockies are outliers, though. Diamondbacks is OK, but D-Rays is awful, though (I vote for TB Pensioners). Pretty much everything else from the period is bleah at best.

Totally agree, but my #1 priority when I become Czar of Nicknames is getting the Jazz back in N'awlins...

I'm with that. Maybe call Utah the Salt Lakers/Salt Dragons or the Polygamists.
