How about being out by 8 steps and arguing? Sometimes you just have to do the honorable thing and it appears that may not have happened here.

 

No that's not acceptable, but I still don't blame or root against Ashland...just the The Boys in Blue that screwed up the call.

 

As quickly as the fence goes down in real time the coach may have actually thought it bounced and knocked the fence over...I don't know. But the Ump never should have blown this call.

If Ashland's Coach KNEW it went over and argued for a double - shame on them.

If Ashland's Coach asked the CF and RF if it went over and they gave a false answer -- shame on them. (Much less shame, of course, considering they are in HS.)

 

Definitely a teachable moment and they appear to have taught the wrong lesson -- (get away with whatever you can sneak by).

What a joke, WOW!!! In my 5 years off being on the NewCath staff, I have never questioned an umpires call (shook my head, disagreed under my breath, etc....), however I would have been led away in handcuffs if that happened to my team. How can 3 men in blue miss this one?

 

The facilities at Jack C. are nice, but it's a men's slow-pitch facility. The biggest tournament in the state needs to be played on a girls fastpitch field.....no exception. The KHSAA has rules as to field requirements to host a district or regional tournament, how about a rule for the state tourney.

 

What I don't understand is why not play it in Lexington at UK? Texas state plays at UT (or have in previous years). You can't get a better facility than a DI field.

Just watched the video, these umps should be suspended atleast a year over this. I'd like to know who decided they should discuss it. If it was A member of Ashlands staff they should be suspended as well. Will the KHSAA even admit they were wrong and say sorry?

Video seems pretty clear.

 

With a runner on first, in a 3 man crew, the umpire from 3rd base side should be 8 - 12 feet behind 2nd base looking in at home plate. On any ball hit to outfield that has any chance of being a trap, a player collision, or in this case, with a short fence a home run potential one of the field umpires MUST chase the play. I would see this as a mandatory pre-game discussion in light of the temporary fences. My understanding is that the KHSAA wants all fly balls to outfield "chased" during this tournament.

 

I can't tell from the video if anyone did because the camera follows the ball flight.

 

If the Home Plate umpire signaled HR then he had the call IMO and it would take something major to over ride that perspective.

Selection is often political and also driven by the schedules of other facilities. I would agree that there are several facilities within the state that would better support this and be more centralized.

 

Temporary fences are not a favorite of anyone that I know of in the FP community, umpires included

It is always about money. Find a sponsor and get a State event hosted in your area of choice.

Don't know if this was mentioned but it's not just the fences but the infield is cut for 90 foot bases with a very pronounced lip. Seemed that a lot of balls hit there. I won't say I saw any errors caused by it but it really made the field look odd. Only bonus.... The waters were only two bucks... Unlike the 27.50 or so at the Ninth. Got to end that gouging for sure....

...I'll add that the temporary fences used at "The Jack" are absolutely GARBAGE!!!!!! Rickety, with no stability, as can be seen on the video. If you use temporary fence they need to be like the ones used by Beechwood High School, metal that lock into one another, Gail force winds wouldn't blow them over. When playing in the All A tourney back in April many balls were going right through the cheap fence and some parts were leaning over.

 

Bottom line: this tourney MUST be moved to a girl's fastpitch field.
