Could the NCAA model not be used where Region Champions play at neutral or rotating home field for a "Super Regional Title" and then only 8 teams advance to State Tourney. You could play that on one filed like UK or EKU, 16 teams means needing multiple fields, but 8 team double elimination could be played on one field over 3 days

Because it gives a more legit Champion IMO. Unlike Baseball where there are limits on how much a pitcher may pitch that isn't an issue in softball. So they play it out to see who's the best over all not just a fluke win. I wish baseball was the same way but it would have to be over two weeks to allow for the pitching.

I agree Regional's need to be that way. District already advances top two teams I don't care if they do it then or not but I could see a reason to do it there also.

I actually think state needs to be 1 and done as well. What other state tournament do we have that there is a double elimination tournament besides wrestling (kind of)?

But softball as a whole across the country is set up as double elimination, I think they are doing it to be more in-line with what is going on across the country.

 

Softball is unique in that the turn around between games is MUCH shorter than most other sports and lends it's self to multi games per day.

 

IMO the only down side to double elimination is that the "David" team isn't going to be able to beat the "Goliath" team twice in most cases, thus ensuring that in most seasons the winners will be the favorites and overall upsets will be few as for the actual champion.

I don't think it's that way in Va or NC. Someone else mentioned Texas. Can you give some other examples. It's common in Travel Ball but is it that common in State HS Ball?

Someone said that this call causes this to be a "tarnished championship" and that Johnson Central should have been playing on Saturday? This game was on Friday morning. Johnson Central is now 0-6 at the state tournament. I watched the video and they clearly got screwed, but they weren't going to make it to Saturday. They would have had to win 4 more games Friday if they won that one. Don't be so dramatic.

According to the article, 2 of the 3 umpires signal HR, the 3rd base ump called the ground rule double... I think he was probably the farthest from the play, how did they use his determination of the play to overturn theirs?
