The thing that jumps out to me, looking at the temporary fencing, is the fact that a.) it is highly perforated (I'm assuming to keep the weight down, and to allow any wind from catching it and knocking it over) and b.) that it is white in color. To me (an uneducated softball observer) both of those factors helped in the umpires incorrect viewing of the play.

 

If it's a solid wall (even a temporary one), there's no chance you mistake where the ball bounces. It would've left their line of sight once it cleared the fence, until it rebounded off the ground and came back up. Likewise (and to a lesser degree), if the wall was any other color other than what the ball was, I'd say the contrast in colors would also allow you to determine better where the ball was.

 

Am I off based in my thinking? (And yes, I know it does nothing to correct this egregious error for this young lady and her team.)

wow. All I have to say is that JC should be proud of their coach. In his interview after the game, he was exactly what you want your Child's coach to be. Professional and respectful. Even if the officials and KHSAA do not deserve it.

 

I noticed the policeman escorting him off the field when he got tossed. I must say, if it were me, the police officer would have needed the cuffs and likely the taser.

I would have sat in the middle of the circle until Julian Tackett himself came out there and explained to me how my team didnt win that game. Travesty!!!

Since KHSAA isn't likely to do anything, next year we'll be sure to secure the services of a bail bondsman before we head to the venue.... Just in case!

He did have to leave. There was no ruckus or anything. He had gotten stopped by the news reporter and was talking to him. You can see by the footage of the interview that he was relatively calm.

I'd say having the police escort him out was a bit of overkill.

Would be good to know how the conversation took place between the three blind mice . Obviously they meet to discuss the matter , Only 1 of three even remotely possibly made any move signaling ground rule double. So you have two guys who saw HR , and one dufus who might have saw GR double . How does the two who made no call be influenced by the one guy ? At that point in the game with Ashland dejected because they knew LOST and JC celebrating because THEY KNEW THEY WON how in the world does Blue change the call . All three should never ever NEVER call another HS game . Letem' go do little league .

My thing with everyone saying that 2 umpires saw homerun is that it's possible only one did. I'm not sure how the rotations are supposed to work or what each umpire is supposed to be looking at but it would make sense to me that one of the three is looking at the baserunners to make sure they touch bases. So now you only have two umpires looking at the ball (one HR, one GR 2B). Now should have just one been watching the ball and two watching the bases?

I'll just "make it up to her" with the next batter and any borderline pitch. Unfortunately, the next hitter cranks one out, game over, right?

 

Losing coach gets mad and says the ball bounced over the fence...and when one of the other two umpires agrees that it may have, now here's the home plate ump's chance to have his make up call...so he changes his call. After all, it's the best of both worlds, in his mind...it makes up for his missed call the batter earlier, but still gives JC a chance with 2 on now.

Yeah, I only tossed it out there as a possibility, not necessarily a probability. The thing that I'd put to Ashland's coach was that the phantom "ball four" wasn't necessarily going to result in an out...it simply would've made the count 3-2. So, there's no guarantee she wouldn't have walked on the subsequent pitch.

 

As to your last question...they're probably regretting opening this thread in the first place.
