Ben Carson...possible POTUS?

Featured Replies

I heard him talk about HSA's on TV, HSA's are just a part of the fix not the entire thing. HSA's allow you to set money aside for later use...in theory the healthy could pay smaller premiums and place more in HSA's to use as needed.

I have a friend who probably 15+ years ago did something similar, he started setting money aside to pay his day to day medical expenses and bought a major health policy for any issues that would cost him over $10,000 he has since raised that to $20K then $50 has his personal health account grew due to yearly contributions and he and his wife being fairly healthy. I assume HSA's would work similar under his plan.

Let's talk logistics. How does a single mom of, let's say 2, making...ummm...$13.00 an hour, paying $600/month for rent, an average of $200 for utilities, and let's say $300/no for groceries, and oh.....$200/no for car payment, and, 150/mo for gas find that money to put into an HSA?

Obama has not failed because he lacked extensive government experience. He has failed because he is exceedingly lazy and has no appreciation for the economic liberty that has made this nation great.

It is a rare that I defend Pres. Obama but I don't think I agree with this assertion. While I don't like many of the things Obama has strived for, my observation is that he worked pretty hard for them. Some his work did not reach success such as passing extended gun control which I am thankful for the sake of 2nd Amendment Rights. Others he was successful at, such as getting Obamacare passed. Not thrilled that it passed but I can't deny the fact that he got it passed.

Out of curiosity...back to what, exactly? Just trying to establish at what point we took a wrong turn.

For me this means that people take responsibility for their selves and do not want a handout from the government, unless it is an act of necessity. More rugged individualism, it is still possible in this modern world. It also means that America restores its position as a leader in the world. Some believe that America has been pushy over the years. While we have not been perfect, where would the world be if the US had not been there to help win WWI, WWII and the Cold War? Where would many people be without US aid?

If you don't believe that Obama is lazy, I suggest that you study his daily public schedule, which is available online. He puts much more energy into his golf game and campaign fund raising than he has into working with Congress to get legislation passed. He caused a huge traffic jam a few days ago at rush hour when he decided to stop his motorcade to play catch with some Little Leaguers. If you have ever driven in DC at rush hour, then you will understand the problem. I drive through one of Obama's favorite local golf courses every day. Fortunately, he usually golfs there on Saturday while I am at home working.

Don't forget how Obamacare was passed. It was passed without a single Republican vote and he still had to bribe a couple of fellow Democrats to vote for the bill by offering some expensive incentives, the bill for which American taxpayers will pay. Obama did not work hard to get his signature bill passed, he pulled out his no limit credit card to buy just enough votes.

I don't recall any president in my lifetime make such a feeble effort to get legislation passed. Obama's laziness is the reason that he has resorted to so many dubious executive orders. Having a staffer type an order and signing it is much less work than following the constitutional process.

All that Ben Carson has in common with Obama is his skin color.

I agree as I don't believe President Obama is lazy. Also, I believe he is an intelligent man. I just disagree with his formula to run particularly the economics of this country.

Do you think many black democrats look at him as the Uncle Tom type or just that his being conservative over rides the fact he is black?

Yes. Unfortunately he will be looked at as an Uncle Tom type and likely will not gain acceptance in the black community.

The HSA is only one part of the equation not the entire plan...my former employer had a plan where HSA's if chosen had a direct contribution from the employer as well as any set aside by the employee. There are many ways that this can work...HSA isn't perfect fit for everyone (thus your example) but it is a piece of a bigger solution.

I would bet if Dr Carson was saying the exact same things but wasn't identified as a Republican he would be accepted.

Using your numbers there would be around $9000 available after taxes and earned income credits for all other expenses.

Are you taking into account expenses such as new tires, oil changes, field trip fees, new clothes for growing children, etc?

Because I'm here to tell you, $27,040/year gross doesn't leave barely a dime left over.

I'm going by the numbers you posted. After those expenses and taxes and earned income credit there would be $9000 available to spend.

You would cash in with that bet also.

First, I have lived on $27,040 gross, with 2 pre-teen kids. It was all I could do to manage. In fact, the $27,040 was what I made (at that time) working 2 jobs. Between additional expenses such as after school care ($100 week), summer care ($200 week), and things like field trip expenses, etc, I often had to make the choice between paying the electric, or buying food some weeks. Add in sports activities fees, uniforms for such, etc, that $9,000 gets whittled away in no time. Or, should low income people be compelled to forego activities for their children?

Platitudes.

What are his specific plans to accomplish any of that?

The HSA is only one part of the equation not the entire plan....

That's why I asked my original question. Give us details so we can make intelligent decisions. All I heard was theory. It's hardly new theory for a person who considers themselves a conservative.
