Ran (almost literally) into Shaq at a bar in Orlando years ago. You can't fully appreciate his size until you're right next to him.

 

Same. Was on the floor when he was with the Heat in Indy. I thought Alonzo was just gigantic, til Shaq came strolling out. Looked like his daddy. Biggest human I've ever seen.

Rajon Rondo...he's a very weird guy.

Giancarlo Stanton. He DWARFS every other player out there.

I met Johnny Bench in the airport. I've heard how big of a jerk he is, but I just went up to him shook his hand and told him he was my favorite player of all time and it was a pleasure to meet him. He was incredibly nice. After realizing I wasn't hounding him for an autograph and really just wanted to tell him that, he stood there and talked to me for a minute and we both moved on.

 

It was really cool for me.

Basketball players in general are just total freaks of size when you see them in person. Mutombo was walking through a hotel I was at in Atlanta once and I nearly fainted. I also saw Boogie Cousins a couple years later in the same hotel. He was as dumb as I thought he would be so no shock in that.

 

One of my buddies' older brother went to Georgetown while Mutombo was there. He said Mutombo would walk into parties, a full foot higher than almost everyone there, he'd spread his two arms out, and with his super-deep and raspy voice he'd say, "Who will sex the Mutombo?" Then almost inevitably there were one (or two) young ladies who would walk up to him and escort him away for "activities unknown".

Went to basketball camp going into my freshman year and Ralph Sampson was working the camp, he had just completed his freshman year at UVA. Skinny, but my gosh was he ever so tall, and VERY athletic. Met Tommy John...pretty decent sized guy but what stood out to me were the size of his hands, they were huge. Went to college with and played some pick up ball against Popeye Jones. Large guy, but very unassuming looking. Never would have thought he would have a 10 year NBA career AND have seasons where he averaged a double double.

Once former Bengals All-Pro defensive lineman Mike Reid retired and started his pianist, singer, and songwriter career, you would have never guessed that he played football by looking at him. My dad (who played with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra) toured with him for a summer and, as a youngster, I got to spend some time with Mike.

I was a year ahead of Chris Sabo at Chase. He was an incredibly nice guy. He was out at the 1Ls get together at a bar near campus and I sat and had a couple w/ him. Funny, I wanted to talk about the '90 World Series, and he wanted to discuss which professors to avoid.

Met Rondo at a camp he puts on in Louisville about 5 years ago. Little slip of a man...but very long arms and FREAKISHLY big hands for a man his size.

Here's another guy that is much cooler than I anticipated.

I have coached AAU with Cris Collinsworth when our sons played together in 5th grade. I know he gets a bad wrap but he is a pretty good down to earth guy.

 

Ran into Former Bills QB Jim Kelly coming out of the Waterfront back when I was in my early 20's and heading in for College Night...I shook his hand and I have never felt a hand that freakin Big in my life. Absolutely humongous hands.

 

Brandon Phillips lives just around the bend from me and I ran into him walking his dog and carrying his little baby in a papoose one day. He is a great dude.

 

Merril Hoge is another guy who I have met several times since he lived in Ft. Thomas and his son played AAU ball with my son one year in the Spring on that team Collinsworth and I coached. Solid dude.

 

I remember seeing Tiger Woods at Have a Nice Day Cafe in Cincinnati back in the late 90's and it was a trip. He had all these big bodyguards with him and all these drunk young girls carrying around those fishbowls full of Alcohol were literally attacking him. I have never seen a celebrity have to deal with that and it was crazy. Tiger just stood at the bar smiling.
