Are the Catholic schools taking over 9th region basketball?

Featured Replies

The classification has nothing to do with my response but I've talked about that in past and I didn't wasn't ppl to think I was bashing on the catholic (private) schools. :thumb:

Didn't take it that way at all. Ohio has been working for years on a way to come up with way to properly classify private schools.

Gotcha. That's an age-old argument here on BGP. Rememer, though , that many, many public school districts will take the same out-of-district kid that the Catholic schools are taking. In NKY only Boone County Schools do not allow it.

I know. That's a big reason I don't post a lot on those threads. The whole open closed enrollment is very foggy to me. I'm sure it's cut and dry. I just don't understand it well enough to make a comment. I don't like to comment about issues when I don't completely understand all the information.

On the boys side, I would say emphatically NO! - Prior to this season, CovCath last won the region in 2006 and NCC it was 2000. IMO, clearly Holmes is the program to beat in the 9th region having won 5 titles since 2005 with a state title in 2009.

Not to mention a Final 4 appearance and a Runner-up slot in that time frame as well. I agree with Clyde, it's cyclical, nothing more and nothing less.

They have it hitting on all cylinders right now. Coach Ruthsatz and Dawn have a lot to do with the success. The organizational level with the feeder schools are impressive, Rich Maile was one of the great architects on St. Pius sports programs. Catholic Schools have dominated volleyball since the inception in Ky because of their feeder school organization starting in 3rd grade.

Holmes is always going to have the athletes, then I believe it becomes cyclical from there. CCH should have a good 5-7 year run in their pipeline. NCC should have similiar results.

Yes, it's cyclical. On girls side, after next year, I don't see NDA or HC being as talented. I see Highlands, Ryle and others getting stronger.

This never ceases to amaze me when one of the catholic schools wins the region. Holmes has clearly had the most success in boys over the last 10 years, but since 2006, I think it has been a public school that has won the 9th region. It is very cyclical. I am probably the most public school advocate that you can possibly be. I would have never sent my kids to private schools, not because they are not good because I really don't know, but because I believe in the public school education. Now I have no idea really how good a private school is because I have never stepped foot in one except their gym or athletic field.

With that mindset, I have no anomosity whatsoever against private schools competing in the state tourney with public schools. Holmes could have just as easily been going to Rupp as anyone. This thinking that the 9th region might be taken over by catholic schools in basketball is just sour grapes.

There really isn't any difference between the public and private schools in the 9th region in basketball. CovCath, NCC, ND always have pretty good teams but it is not like they are winning regions every year. St. Henry and Holy Cross are always competitive and maybe better than average. Villa is usually good at the D3 level. But the same can be said for the public schools. Holmes Boys and Boone Co Girls always have good teams. Conner, Ryle have had success on both the Boys and Girls level in recent years. Dixie and Boone Co Boys and Highlands girls have had good teams in the recent years. Obviously at the All-A level NCC and Brossart if we include the 10th region, have dominated at that level. But with only CovCath and ND being a "large" school it would be pretty hard for private schools to dominate since there are a lot more large public schools. And being a large school is more important than being public or private.

Taking over? No. Consistent? Yes.

The Holmes program seems like it's been the best overall in Nky for a while.

Is Boone still a top dog in girls basketball?

CovCath and NewCath on the boys side and NewCath and Notre Dame on the girls side are consistently good in just about ever sport.

Boundaries.

Bracken draws from all of Bracken with no other schools competing for kids.

New Cath draws from all of Campbell county with one other private school, 1 county school and 5 city schools.

Larger population but a lot more schools for kids to attend.

Not sure boundaries is the right word.

Augusta although its a independent school is in Bracken, depending on your address you can go to either/or. If you want your child to go to one or the other its pretty easy to get around. I've seen it go both ways

I admit I don't know how it works in NKY there are a lot more schools up there. Maybe boundaries isn't the right word. I'm guessing here but Cant you enrol at any private school no matter of where you live. For example I live in Bracken county out in the county not Brooksville or Augusta, I could enrol my daughter in St. Pat in Maysville or St. Augustine in Augusta if I could A. afford the tuition and B. provide her transportation to and from school. I assume it is that way in NKY with the private schools. Please correct me if I am wrong. With that said I am under the impression that if a kid lives in Kenton Boone or Campbell they could attend any private or catholic school they choose granted their family could afford the tuition and provide transportation.

If that is the case then the famlies that have money can send their kids to whatever school they want. Then that could potentially draw the more kids with more opportunities to become great players to one private school or another. Hence all the talent winding up at one school or the other.

In no way do I mean any disrespect to these schools. They are going by the rules as far as I know and kudos to them for all their accomplishments.

There was a thread on here a week or so ago asking the question if certain players had stayed at other schools instead of enrolling at CCH or NCC. I didn't really understand that thread but I assume these kids all went to the private schools to get a lot of talent in one school or another to kinds get the advantage on the competition.

Maybe classifying the Private schools in their own division. Which I don't really like because that would put the schools like St. Pat at an even bigger disadvantage. Then I've read on here to realign the 9th and 10th regions. In a sense the 37th goes back to the 9th region. GRC goes to the 11th and MoCo goes to the 16th. But who comes to the 10th?

Im kinda getting off topic now so I will stop :D . Its clear to see I have a lot more questions than answers.:banghead: I would just like to see a level playing field across the board for all schools not just mine. :thumb:

When kids get to the high school level it is pretty much open enrollment in the public schools, except Boone Co. who has pretty strict residency requirements. I do not know about the parochial schools. Reciprocity agreements between districts is pretty prevalant e.g. student A resides in Newport and decides to attend Bellevue, the districts may have several students that go both ways, and each Board of Ed votes to allow the ADA (state funding) to follow students. Done like this all over the state. I would believe that's what Augusta/ Bracken do. There have been major lawsuits in the last 10 years challenging those that don't allow these agreements Callaway/Murray and Knox/Corbin are the most high profile.

I just don't see any way a district like Bracken, Nicholas, Gallatin, Trimble, etc. can ever get an even playing field. Even classes such as football don't ensure that. For those districts, they get a good run with talent every once in a while, but it is extremely difficult to be as consistent with talent as the bigger counties or schools.

Trimble for example is in a district with the 3 Oldhams, very difficult for them to even make the regional tourney once in 10 years. Enrollment differences are significant between Trimble and them.

I don't know how you fix it to have parity, don't think it can be done.

Thanks for the info. :thumb: when you get I the bigger populations it sounds like it can get difficult to keep straight.

Agreed on not having a solution to make it better. At least not one where everyone comes out happy.

Interesting thread, with some very interesting posts. My two favorite posts in the thread are above.

First would say the answer is a resounding no, as we just had a seven year run of public school title winners snapped.

Second is absolutely correct. CovCath and NewCath will always be the hunt for the title, and are almost always top five teams in the region. But this isn't any different than any other sport at those schools, they are almost always good in every sport.

The Catholic schools in NKY have always competed well against the larger public schools when it comes to basketball. CCH, NCC, HC, and St.Henry (In the 10th Brossart), this is nothing new. I agree with everyone above the main reason is the feeder system the Catholic schools have compared to the public schools. Even small schools like Holy Cross has 5 8th grade basketball teams to feed from. Most public schools by that time have narrowed there teams down to 1 or 2 Junior High teams.

But with all that said it's hard to say Catholic schools are dominating when Holmes is clearly the most dominate and most consistent program over the last decade.
