With this said won't it be even worse next year. Doesn't Holmes have 6-7 seniors on the team this year? I know Hill and Chames are gone. Not looking to far ahead to next year but where do they go for size as I am sure they will see nothing but zone next season as well. Different thread I know but something to ?

 

As Mr. Sixer has suggested, if we need to move threads with this I absolutely understand. In the meantime, though, I'd like to remind everyone that this year's Holmes JV squad 1) finished with a better overall record than the varsity and 2) includes the entire starting five and more from the middle-school team that won state as eighth-graders -- and that was without McClendon. Though Chames and Hill are big losses (pun intended), soph-to-be Jaiden Greene is actually taller than either of them though still on the raw side. Add Avery, Moore, and Arnold plus the current coaching staff and the Bulldogs should be just fine without having to send five guards out there.

This sounds like sour grapes. Nick is a superior player and is hard to defend. If others can't guard him , they simply hold on or grab which is what the Bulldawgs did most of the evening. CCH will do well down state because of Nick Ruthsatz.

Agreed on the sour grapes (though not necessarily agreed about the grabbing). Look, this kid does what any of us would do if we spent our careers being guarded by larger players: he moves his body hard into opponents to create space for the shot, he gets defenders into the air and then draws contact, he sells it a little when contact does occur. We don't necessarily see all of that from, say, Hatton or Bolden because their physical attributes afford them some advantages from the git-go. If someone wants to cry "punk" on Ruthsatz, so be it, but his moves are within the rules, they allow him to be a highly effective player, and he should get credit where it's due.

 

The only move I don't get is the quadruple rolling-up of the shorts. Maybe it's a good luck charm.

Anyone notice what is missing? 139 posts and Where is Walter? His baby lost last night and his adopted sons lost Sunday. I hope someone removed his belt and shoelaces before he headed home?

As one of the biggest Bulldog fans out there it's hard to swallow especially when I had the great pleasure of coaching Quinton Chames in middle school and see the sadness in his eyes.Cov Cath Iknow you will represent the 9th region on great fashion and bring the hardware back to NKY. Great game plan by CovCath but a little surprised there hasn't been more mentions of Holmes complete inability to play against the zone? Booher is a state championship caliber coach and the rest of the staff is pretty highly respected but Holmes looked completely lost playing against that zone? They were extremely effective the few times the ball was thrown into the lane for some high low action but the rest of the game they were content to pass the ball around the perimeter until someone shot a contested 3? No attempts to get the ball to the short corner, screen the backside of the zone and throw a skip pass, etc? Credit CovCath for playing well with the zone but Holmes made it way too easy to be defended.

 

Ruthsatz best player on the floor and while Bolden will end up at a higher level when all is said and done I would probably take Ruthsatz to run my HIGH SCHOOL team. Would liked to have seen Bolden step up in the first half when Ruthsatz was going off and take on the challenge of guarding him. If you are going to be able to get on the court on the high D1 level you better be ready to guard players of that caliber.

I was puzzled by it so I asked a local college coach for his thoughts, and he informed me that many coaches -- himself included -- try to avoid putting their best offensive player on the opposing team's best offensive player. He said something along the lines of, "That's not where I want his energy being spent." This might not be the explanation for every situation and other coaches may disagree, but I see the line of reasoning.

Dead on! The same could be said for CCH and coach Ruthsatz not putting Nick on Bolden in their first meeting this year. CCH used CVH and #14 the majority of that game to guard Bolden. Very good strategy by both coaches IMO. Save that energy.

It's hard to be play a better all-around game than Nick R did for the first quarter of the game. Clinic.

I hope I get this point across without taking away from Nick's leadership & outstanding play on the court. As good as Nick is, and he is very good. But I believe in the big picture, Scott Ruthsatz & his coaching staff is what has made the biggest difference to the program. .

 

It's a strong staff. As I've said before Joe Fredrick is a big help to Scott and the rest of the staff. I'm always fascinated with watching coach/player interaction before and during games. If you noticed Bo having some bounce in his step in the tourney a lot of that has to do with Joe. Joe got him going during warmups and kept him going during TOs. Same with CVH who is Joe's #1 project. Some of it's basketball skill stuff but it's also mental stuff. Joe can get a boy fired up and ready to go. Damn good coach.

Heard a rumor that Coach Ruthsatz might not be back next year at CovCath so that he can follow his son. Any truth to this?

 

Again, just a rumor I heard from someone else.
