Who writes checks?

Featured Replies

Just had an interesting discussion with a co-worker, concerning checks. Seemed someone had hacked her Pay Pal account and gotten her ATM and credit card numbers. Was going to be awhile until new cards/numbers were issued. She said she was concerned about carrying a bunch of cash around with her until then, so I told her in some instances (grocery store, mall, etc.) she could always write a check. She looked at me like I had a third eye, and said she never writes checks.

I'll admit, I don't write as many checks as I did a couple of decades ago...but, it's not foreign to me by any means.

So, do you? Is this an age-specific situation?

I don't write a lot of them, but there are still a few monthly bills that I pay by check.

Very seldom do I use checks but there are still times when I need them.

I typically only use checks to pay for school fees (athletic fees, fundraisers, etc), when I make donations (so I have a paper trail for tax purposes) and athletic camps I send my kids to. I do all my bill paying online or through automatic deductions. I also write checks to my mechanic because he charges extra to use a credit card.

Same.

Guess I am old school. I write checks for everything. Don't own a debit card. Use my credit card very little and if I do, I pay the full balance when it is due. Don't carry much cash either.

I write checks for almost all bills.

Check volume has been declining for the last 10 years but has basically leveled off and will be the same volume in the next few years. There will always be checks written for a paper trail and for when it is easier than using a debit card or paying online in some cases. And of course people will always play the float game.

We write 5-10 a month, most bills are paid online now. Tithes, Orthdontist and local utilities are about the only checks we write any more.

That said, my wife writes 200-300 hundred per month in her job.

I write them for our cleaning lady and the few instances when I have to mail a bill in. Sometimes when we are running low on funds I will write one at the grocery store just to give me that extra day or two until I can get money into the account.

For my personal finances: almost never.

But all the payments for my office are done by check.

A few monthly bills, my kids weekly day care bill, school stuff. If I don't have cash I will write one for my hair cut.

Floating a check, imo, would be virtually impossible in this day and age.

Pay my HOA by check and on occasionally when I'm making a donation or including it in a card or something.

I agree. Unless the check is received after-hours on Friday or on the weekend, I believe checks clear at midnight the same day they're deposited.
