Who writes checks?

Featured Replies

Here's a related question....for those who never write checks, how consistently

do you keep up with your checkbook(if you call it a CHECKbook) balance? I know the younger crowd prefers to use the debit card for everything....when I asked a banker how good the young crowd is at keeping up their balance the response was "they don't". They think the "banks balance" is always correct. Little do they know the bank makes errors.

I'm an accountant, and I've never balanced my checkbook. :lol2: I do check my account online almost daily, so I'm pretty confident I'd catch errors if they were made.

I always assume when I see someone writing a check in a store, that they don't have the money to really buy what they're buying.

I haven't balanced a checkbook since I got married (almost 11 years). To be honest I didn't balance one much before that either. I actually went almost 2 years once without balancing my check book. I ended up giving up on it and just opened an new account.

The painter's house is always the dirtiest one on the street. :D

I write probably 4-5 a month. There are certain restaraunts around town that

I will write a check at if I don't have the cash on me. I use my card so much traveling

that when I am at home I don't mind using a check at a local business.

The only check I write is church donation. Pay all my bills online.

My church donation is done monthly by EFT.

Many, many years ago I was helping somebody balance their checkbook. In the margins on some of the pages (usually every month or so), I would see the initials "ESW" and a random amount either added or subtracted in. I asked, "What does EDW mean?" The reply, "Oh, that just means an Error Some Where!"

I push money to my creditors online on their websites. If they charge me to do that or make it a hassle, I write them a check. I also use checks for church (tax purposes).

I balance my bank statement to the penny every month.

I balance other peoples checking accounts for a living but when it comes to mine, nope. I round checks up to the nearest $10 and deposits down to the nearest $10 to make it simple to keep a running total. I then look at bank statement activity each month and verify anything that looks odd. I review the check copies and make sure deposits are in and I'm done. Takes a couple minutes at most.

With Quicken it only takes about 10 minutes to balance my bank statement. I'm a numbers wonk. I'll search for an hour to find a $0.01 discrepancy or it will drive me nuts.

With online baking is it really that necessary to balance a check book now? Do you use online banking?

Pay all my bills online. It's an idiosyncrasy of mine. I can't not balance my bank statement or it will drive me bonkers. I even balance my credit card statement and my savings account every month. Part of it goes back to my struggling college days when a few cents one way or another could mean bouncing a check, the habit has stuck.

There have been times that I've inadvertently added something that should have been deducted so balancing it finds my mistakes. Granted that doesn't happen often since I started using Quicken but it does happen.

I would say not really. Again, I do it with Quicken solely for budgeting purposes, so I can see what I'm spending (or wasting my money on).
