We write 5-10 a month, most bills are paid online now. Tithes, Orthdontist and local utilities are about the only checks we write any more.

That said, my wife writes 200-300 hundred per month in her job.

I used to sign 600-800 per month in my job.

Guess I am old school. I write checks for everything. Don't own a debit card. Use my credit card very little and if I do, I pay the full balance when it is due. Don't carry much cash either.

I write them for most things as well.

Maybe it is an age thing.

While I fully admit that I'm wrong , I get a bit perturbed when I'm in line and I am behind someone writing a check.

I write 'em fast. A function of writing so many back in the day.

Almost guarantee I'm faster than sliding the card, signing the receipt, etc.

I agree. Unless the check is received after-hours on Friday or on the weekend, I believe checks clear at midnight the same day they're deposited.

See Hellbird's post above. The check has to be deposited or be a received item at your bank is the key. Until it is you have the float of the money.

A large portion of checks are converted to ACH items currently and ACH items carry an effective date supplied by the Originator. So say you mail in a check for a phone bill. You have use of that money while the telephone company is waiting on the mail. And then after they receive it and they convert it to an ACH item it has to be put into a file and sent to their Originating Depository Financial Institution for entry into the ACH stream. It will have to be passed thru an ACH Operator to get to your Bank as a received item.

The only check I write is church donation. Pay all my bills online.

I write checks for about 75% of my bills. My kids just shake their heads and say I need to get into the times. However, they have never refused one that I write to them and say thank you.

I write them for our cleaning lady and the few instances when I have to mail a bill in. Sometimes when we are running low on funds I will write one at the grocery store just to give me that extra day or two until I can get money into the account.

I remember playing the float game in my younger days. I used to get paid weekly and I would often write a check on Wednesday or Thursday, because I knew I'd have funds available by the time the check actually posted. Nowadays, the float is only 48 hours at most, unless you mail it, which gives you an extra day or two. I don't try to take advantage of float anymore. I keep enough in my accounts to not have to worry about it. If I ain't got it, I don't spend it.

I don't use a debit card and never will. I have zero trust in the security. I also don't trust buying things online and try to do that as little as possible. Some of it you just can't avoid (e.g. BGP fee :)) Hence, we write checks.

I make my house payment and car payment by check. Have about four other bills that go in by check, just because I've never switched them over. I also make my weekly church contribution by check.

I'm reminded of a funny story a friend of my parents told about debit cards: He said he couldn't wait for the day the Christian Church in Lancaster put a debit reader on the back of the pew in front of him so he'd never have to write another check again!

I write 'em fast. A function of writing so many back in the day. Almost guarantee I'm faster than sliding the card' date=' signing the receipt, etc.[/quote']

That's impossible

I write checks for almost all bills.

As does my wife.

The only time I write a check is for the weekly collection at church.
