I found the same site...it's an explanation of the most misunderstood rules in basketball. So, Sweet16, I am wrong regarding the rule book. My apologies.

The actual rule to which you refer does say that the defender has to keep himself and his arms straight up or he risks conceding his "rule of verticality" right. It's up the official to figure that out I guess. I'll stand by my point, however, that the way I explained my point previously is the way the game has been taught for many moons ... and I've been around a lot of basketball and never seen it called on offensive player. But again, technically, your are correct and I was wrong. Good call!

I'm two states away so I'm not going to comment on this specific play. But how you have attempted to explain the rule on defense and the rule of vertically has been completely wrong . Some officials may wrongly give the offensive player the benefit of the doubt but the defensive player has every right to his space from the floor up to the ceiling as long as he is set straight up and down. Feet being on the ground is irrelevant.

I have heard it described in this manner: If the defenders elbows are not behind their ears, they have forfeited their verticality. Not many defenders have that physical position unless they are being backed down on the block. On their feet or left their feet is not the measure, location and position of the arms and upper body is the indicator.

Is having your elbows behind your ears even physically possible?? I think I just tore something attempting it..

That may be a refs own description of how he calls the play but that description is not in the rules.

For the record my first post was not going against what Clyde said because if how he described the play is correct then the correct call was made. I was just correcting someone's incorrect description of legal defensive position

Again, the fact that Nick "jumped into him" is irrelevant to this call. You often have a shooter going forward on a shot.

I said it was the correct call for one reason. I don't think Pangallo went straight up. Simple as that.

Pangallo was off of him by about 3 or 4 feet. Ruthsatz rises to shoot. No defender in the world when reacting to a shot going up from 20 feet jumps straight up into the air ie keeping the principle of verticality. They always come forward. Their arm is out and they come forward when reacting to the shot. In order for it to be either a PC or a "no call" Pangallo would have had to jump straight up AND his arm that was trying to block the shot would have had to be straight up ie not coming out in the slightest.

I've never seen a defender do that on the perimeter when trying to block a jumper.

With that, I wasn't the official watching the defender. If someone has film of it that shows he didn't come forward at all then I'll say the call was wrong.

The call on Pangallo is neither here nor there. I would have gone with a no call but I'm sure Mr. lawildcat would be telling me right now why I would be wrong. The Breds just were not hitting shots today including free throws. I saw a lot of dropped balls and passes to no one. Newcath just wasn't in sync. Schuh did a great job on defense keeping the rebounds out of the big guys hands. Congrats to CovCath who was the better team today.

The same play happens underneath the basket all of the time and no one gets upset. Same rules apply.

Ok you are telling me if a big guy is posting up and goes up for a shot and the defender jumps straight up and the offense of guy jumps 3feet into him with his shoulder it's a foul on the defender come Clyde you are smarter then that. It's a offensive foul I have seen it called a lot with big guys no different what happen today to pangallo instead it was a foul on defender horrible call IMO

"agree with Clyde that even though the offensive player charges into the defender it gets called on the defender almost always. And that was a bad call."

To funny. It was the right call. Get over it. Read the rule book. Defensive player bit on the fake, went flying into the air, once he is in the air he is dead. Ruthsatz took advantage of Pangallo being in mid air out of control, jumped into him, hence foul was called, always was and always will be. Was the correct call. Get over it.

I am not clear on what you are saying.

I think what is clear is Cov Cath won. Each team had some adversity, bad shooting, etc. Cov Cath responded better.

Defender goes up in the air' date=' done deal, over, contact made defense gets called for it. It is the rule. [/quote']You couldn't be more wrong.

Learn the rules. Not what you think they should be. Defender has a right to jump and down. That is a riot. Nope, can't do it. Easy call.

The defender has the right to go straight up and down. It may not be called an offensive foul but a no call is better.

It ok. Take a deep breath.

Cov Cath beats them twice, first one in a 1/2 half game and then this one. Clearly the better team. No doubt.

Rule of verticality

Everybody talking about one call, that did not even effect the game that much. Make some free throws you win period. Why at the end of the game your big is shooting 3's instead of any of the guards, especially Mavous. I have zero problem with how Nick plays he draws contact gets to the line and gets the other team in foul trouble. Smart if you ask me, I love the kids game as an outside observer.
