Coach K's replacement

Exactly the reason I think 3-5 years down the road his name will come up quite a bit when its time.

As a outsider looking in I do think 3 years from now is a perfect year for K to retire . Win gold in 2016 and then follow it up with one last run for a title in 17 .

How often has hiring "Within the family" worked?

UCLA: Went outside to Gene Bartow who lasted 2 years. Then former Wooden Asst. Cunningham for two. Farmer and Hazzard were disasters.

UNC: Dean picked Guthridge who had 2 good years. Doherty was a nuclear melt down but Roy has worked out very well.

UK: Hall succeeded Rupp (maybe best succession of a legend ever) but since then UK has stayed "in house" only once, Tubby after Pitino. Worked well for most of the time but not in the end.

Any others?

Johnny Dawkins will be lucky to still have a job after this season. Disaster is the appropriate term for his tenure in Palo Alto.

Chris Collins may end up great, but he's in his first ever season as a head coach, and you have to wonder why it took so long for him to get a chance.

Tommy Ammaker was atrocious at Michigan, he'd last about 3 seasons at a major college program.

Wojo is continuously passed over for other opportunities. Is it because he's not really interested as he's bidding his time for K to step down, or is it because he leaves a lot to be desired?

As a fan of a program other than Duke, I say by all means hire one of these guys when K does call it quits.

B......

I'd like to keep this a fun conversation. So if they didnt keep it in the family who do you guys think they would go after? Keep in mind this will be 5 years down the road.

Maybe you do keep it in the family but I'd at least interview some outsiders. Other than the coaches at the other four or five power schools or guys that are too old to move (Boehim or Pitino), Duke could get just about anyone they wanted.

Bobby Hurley just got his first head coaching gig also.

Keep it in the Coach K tree first. I don't want an outsider taking over immediately after K.

If there is a Hurley ready for the job in 3-5 years, it isn't Bobby. And funny enough I think Danny just might be a guy that could get the job done at a high level with a few more years of experience...

So now we have:

Bobby Hurley

Chris Collins

WoJo

Tommy Amaker

Johnny Dawkins

all earning head coaching experience to apply for the Duke job once Coach K retires.

Should be interesting to see who ends up with it. I'd be shocked if someone from outside of those 5 gets the job.

If I were a Duke fan, not a single name on that list would excite me. Amaker was awful at a big-time program, Dawkins has really struggled (until this year's tournament) at Stanford, and the other 3 are completely untested.

Still feel this way, 3rd in Conf, 2 wins in PAC Tourney, NCAA Bid and Sweet 16 since that post

Dawkins has improved Stanford standing last three seasons in PAC

He clearly saved his job this season, however even this year was a pretty ho-hum season until the tournament.

He's also underachieved compared to expectations every year there except for this season.
