9th Region POY Battle

Featured Replies

Think about this.

We have the all time leading scorer in N Ky history who is a D-I recruit, and maybe the most exciting player in the last 30 years who is garnering looks from high D-I programs who may run 3rd and 4th in the voting.

Who has won the last 3 yrs? Was Bolden the winner last year?

What does being a hold back have to do with this conversation?

Just an opinion that the it allows another year of physical and mental maturity for them. Nothing personal against them.

So who are hold backs?

Ruthsatz being a player of his grade ( non holdback) is hands down POY. The kid is ice cold with his confidence in his shot and ability to take over a game. Regardless of the so called flop move, he knows how to drive and how to beat you with his outside shot. Similar to Beatle but just A bit more consistant and effective. I like the the way the kid runs the court/team.

Would you be speaking of Hatton

So you are penalizing a team (YOUR team) because their roster is made up of good players?

Not sure I agree. I think it's harder to stand out, however when I look at player of year it's more about point totals. There are many many things that don't make a stat line when considering POY.

I agree Ruthsatz falls into this category however so does many NCC players.

All I'm saying is it's not all about points per game.

Not at all, Drew definitely deserves to be included with these 3 players. Drew's value to NewCath's overall success is invaluable, and you could make the case for a few more of his teammates as well. However, when looking at the other 3 teams you take their "stud player" out of the line-up, and IMO, there is a big drop off in the entire make-up of those teams. Should that be the only criteria for POY.....hell no, but it could be a factor.

Bottomline: We are blessed in the 9th Region having such a great mix of highly skilled players on quite a few teams, and with that it's a very difficult task of choosing one player over the other. I think who ever wins the award will be deserving and we as fans should just be thankful for being able to witness some very damn good high school talent.

As far as the 2nd bolded, my comment about "running the show" is above and beyond points scored.

Ruthsatz for sure, he has taken his team to another level.

McDonald would be just behind him IMO. I really want to see this given after the 9th Region Tourney though because I think Drew will really make a name for this award in the tourney and make it hard for him not to be chosen.

Please can we discuss these kids without the holdback issue that inevitably detracts from EVERY thread it comes up?

These types of awards should be announced after the regular season games or after the district tournaments,,,there are no promises that every player in question gets to play in the regionals,,,teams can and will be upset..

So, to be clear, you think the award should not include the post season?

I have a question, how and who decides this prestigious award?

1. Ruthsatz-Scoring, dishing, leading. Senior.

2. McDonald--Yes a Junior, but just Because he has height around him he gets penalized? He's the best big man in the 9th region. Rebounds ARE an important part of the game. Yes, NCC is stacked but it starts with Drew. I just think he is having a great year AND leading his team. His importance will show in the regional. guys are hanging on him and he fights on. Still like him at #2 vs. Ruthsatz though.

3. Bolden--needs no hype. simply can take over.

4. Hatton---Admire the career no doubt, but his games vs. the regions top two left a little to be desired this year. Had single digits until late into the 4th quarter. So, does Dixie have a supporting cast? or not? If so, then he is NOT a one man team. Opinion seems to be split on whether he has help or not. I know he has scored a bushel of baskets but I just like the others better this year. IMO.

Great year for the 9th. I expect a deep run at state for whomever goes.

PS--is there a most improved award? If so, it goes to Mark Schult. (its not my original idea, I think Clyde said it first but I totally concur) He came out like a house of fire vs. Dixie. Bombing a three and hitting the glass. Seems like he knows there are other options around him but has the confidence to fire it up. I love it. I do not know him personally but love the advancement of his game.

Is it true that his first 3 ever was the game winner vs. NCC last year? Because he was not afraid to launch Friday night. Looked like he had been shooting them from deep all his career. Love when Seniors open up their game and play with confidence....nice job.

Should have let the fans at the BOK have ballots and vote for their POY.

I think it should include postseason especially if there is a tight race. If Bolden goes off for 35 ppg in the Regional and leads the Dogs to Rupp Arena then I would strongly consider him over Ruthsatz.

If Ruthsatz leads his team like he has all season and ends up having a great 9th Region Tourney where he plays big in those games then he has to be considered.

If Hatton and the Colonels surprise everyone and he goes off leading them to Rupp.

There are a lot of things that can enhance a player's resume for POY.
