January 9, 201412 yr You don't need a story for that. UL needs the surest bet in going to a big boy league. They can't make the wrong hire and fall to the bottom of the ACC and out of the national spotlight. Petrino gives the best shot of that. There is probably a lot of truth to this and it is somewhat similar to UK hiring Cal. Barnhart passed on Cal after Tubby left to avoid the Cal baggage and went with what looked like a good safe hire in BCG. After that good safe hire turned into a wreacking turd, Barnhart HAD hire someone who could win so he was willing to take the risk of Cal. With UofL going into the ACC, Jurich could not afford for a Krag type back slide so he had to have a coach who could continue UofL's progress. I am still a little surprised he went with Petrino since Petrino showed Jurich so little respect in job hunting behind his back. But, I guess since Jurich cannot afford another coaching bomb (which happens to even the best AD's sometimes), he had to swallow his pride.
January 9, 201412 yr Anybody? How can you expect us UK fans to answer this? We haven't had a .500 plus coach since............ I honestly can't remember so I really cannot answer the question. The coach we had who's second have of his UK stint was over .500 (Brooks) was a guy that even the most UK hating UofL fan had to was a very decent guy. I do not know the specific on the family situation but they seem to be 'settled' in the River City. Another interesting thing in this article: "Perhaps more important than any of this, Petrino has repaired and maintained a strong relationship with Tom Jurich, a person to whom he has to feel indebted. Remember this? When Petrino was at rock-bottom, he turned to Jurich, who played an instrumental role in him landing the WKU job. "Tom really helped me going through this rough time," Petrino said. Will BP come back and stay? Are the wild oats settled? Only time will tell. But Jurich owns this decision. If there was time to say 'In Tom we trust.' its now. Because trust is all there is at this point. BP will have to walk the walk for many years to put the past behind him. But he seems to be willing to try in the fishbowl of a college sports town.
January 9, 201412 yr Again why does Petrino get the blame? He had very little issues when he was the coach. Kragthorpe is the one who had no discipline. As mentioned earlier, you cant be laid back in college football. I think at the time Jurich was deflecting the pressure on Krags to blame petrino. Petrino also left Krags with 19 starters off a Orange bowl team. Totally his fault and Jurich said so you have selected memory!

You want to talk about selectivity? How can we can talk about "coach speak" and not trusting anything athletic departments and coaches say on one hand, then come in here and take everything said in a press conference at face value when it suits us? Of course Petrino had something to do with it. Kragthorpe also had a lot to do with it. If Kragthorpe was a saint and a great leader of men, then Strong wouldn't have had to throw 10 guys off the team for academic issues the day he showed up here.

He must not have checked with the WKU people. He had several issues there with staff, trainers, etc., as well as academic issues.

The stuff mentioned in Eric Crawford's recent column that details the issues you just mentioned with trainers is at the top of the list.

He loves hyperbole. And I'm sure in his mind he was limiting it to football coaching candidates. But yeah, still loves hyperbole.
