Disaster. Didn't post anything after the game because you should never post on BGP angry. All the things that had to break right for Louisville to win failed to do so. The fouls absolutely dictated the game for Louisville. That happens sometimes. Blackshear and Harrell never could get anything going because of all the time they spent on the bench.

 

So far this season, Blackshear has given far more production at the three spot. With him spending all that time riding the pine, Hancock needed to find the shot he'd misplaced sometime in mid-April. He missed just about everything.

 

Foul trouble or not, there's just no excuse for the complete lack of good play from Harrell and Behanan.

 

In the end, the same thing happened yesterday that happened against UNC: the team too a punch to the gut and instead of relaxing and playing the game, Jones and Smith had stretches where they tried to do everything themselves. Those times were when Louisville looked its worst.

 

Plenty of time for these guys to find themselves. 2012 taught me a lot about being patient with a Pitino team until something clicks.

^ it also seemed that UK got a lot more opportunities in transition than UL. They haven't seemed to improve much on getting back after a miss/turnover since the UNC game.

Impressed mainly with the heart. This team put it all out there today, and they defense played really well I thought. I can only think of one ball screen in the first half where our guys got lost. Alex Poythress, my word, kid played well and made those thundering dunks that an upperclassmen should be making. As mentioned before I liked WCS' effort last night. Two points, but was a true enforcer in the paint.

 

Andrew impressed me tonight with his poise, and energy. Those two were ferocious on the perimeter. Andrew utilized the pick and roll, and it because effective because he hit the early stop and pop J in the first half. The return of the lob was great. Those have to be the easiest two points in basketball, and i would like to see UK look for that more often. Also, FT's, we need to be more consistent from the charity stripe. Gotta love a win over the Cards!!!

You can only coach and practice so much on FT's. Obviously they just suck at them. Players aren't focusing or for whatever reason they just lose it when they get to the line. No reason for guards to shoot so poorly from the line.

 

I'd about guarantee these players shoot FT's better in practice but it doesn't translate over. It's unfortunate.

Yep. Those free throws are important. Nazr going 0-6 in the 1997 championship game vs Arizona contributed to that overtime loss. Jones going 0-5 against UConn in the FF in a 1 point defeat is another example. The West Virginia Elite 8 loss is another game that sticks out. Even with their horrendous percentage from the the three point arc they would have still won that game if they could have made a decent percentage from the free throw line. And the thing about missed free throws is some of them are the front end of a bonus, so they're actually missing 2 free throws although it isn't counted that way. I don't see why coaches don't address this issue with more concern. Just saying it's X number feet to the Craft Center from the dorm, so go on your own and practice free throws is not going to get it done.

FT practice needs to be part of high intensity work. Too many times players just stand at the line and shoot X # of FT's, they make 10,20,30 in a row and think they have it figured out, but if they started of 3 for 8 before they got in the groove nothing was accomplished except for false confidence. Cal needs to have an asst just randomly blow a whistle during practice and put some one the line for a 1 and 1, hit them and practice continues...miss and everybody gets a suicide.

And if Louisville shoots even slightly better from three, the Cardinals win this game. Making shots, no matter where they're from, is a lot of conjecture to place on the result of a game like this. Louisville needed to make a lot of plays to make up for obvious disadvantages and failed to do so. Even worse, they failed to capitalize when Kentucky's best player exited the game.

 

Zero production from the three and four for Louisville. Blackshear is shooting 45% from three this season; couldn't stay on the floor. Hancock can't find his shot. Behanan and Harrell took a vacation I think; guards didn't force either of them into situations to make them a factor.

 

Neither of these teams looked particularly good but both could potentially be good by March.

The 3 point shot from the corner or "Corner 3" is the shortest three point shot you can attempt and is generally considered the highest percentage shot of all 3's attempted.

In regards to what UK wants to do defensively and that is funnel drivers to shot blockers then the most likely kick from a driver is going to be to ball side corner or weak side corner. It is highly unlikely a driver going to basket will be able to make kicks to the top or elbow extended 3's so it is playing the percentages of driver kicking to ball side or weakside corners.

Teams that utilize good spacing and ball movement can get shots from the corner often times pulling bigs from paint to defend in rotations.

So, what Cal wants to see in my opinion, is less perimeter help on drives especially going at basket and forcing driver to score over bigs or at rim. Typically UK is above average shot blocking team, so refrain from help and cut off the typical kick to easiest 3 point shot. If you can defend corner 3's you will force and entry pass into congested area or non-defensive penetrating passes (balls passed back around the perimeter).

i thought in college the three point line is the same distance from the rim all the way around? In the NBA the corners are closer because the court is not wide enough.

I just hope that is a start of what is to come from this young team .
