It's atmosphere and community involvement.

 

I'm on this bandwagon. I think the number of members for X team correlates highly with the teams' fan support.

 

I rarely see any Mayfield fans talk much in the basketball thread, but football . . . that's another story.

To my point however, there were 70 viewers interested enough to open the Bellevue-Dayton thread and read the content, BUT not a single reply.

 

And as many of you have said, there is no interest in the happenings of the small schools (especially in the 9th Region), therefore we have probably evolved into a "big program"//"big school" forum.

 

It doesn't make us bad people.

 

I still disagree. I opened that thread but I don't know anything about either school. They could be big schools for all I know. If there is interest people will talk. If not then they'll call into cyberspace with the big schools and big programs of the 12th Region. It's not a school size thing. It's a school involvement thing.

I tend to agree with Mustang in the Basketball forum. Football may be a different situation because it is classified so small school schools still matter in the postseason.

But back to basketball (and some of the other sports) ......is is not necessarily Big/Small school but a combination of factors.

 

A) Teams have to be good to get a lot of mention/posts/views

B) If a team isn't good you better have once been and now are a bad team so everyone can gripe.

C) You have to have fan base of some sort......good, bad, obnoxious, complaining.....something for others to talk about

D) You need parents that hate the coach or love the coach either way is fine.

E) Any kind of transfer / money / coaching scandal will do.

Fewer and fewer people sit down at a computer. The world is moving toward twitter. Pictures are on sanp chat and pintrest etc. I find the site hard to put content on BGP via my phone so I don't. Posting photos and video are difficult without going to youtube or some other Facebook connections. Most times when I load a picture it rejects it due to size so frustration kicks in.

 

BGP needs to link and draw people to the site from Twitter links and these other popular sites. Find a way to get the parents at schools to check out the site. Handbill the cars, mailers to homes or whatever. Try an ad on cable, pretty cheap. Once you get on the site it is pretty darn cool.

 

I am addicted to the site but I rarely post any longer except the links to pictures. Went to NDA vs WV last night and no one even posted the score. Why not. It should be easy to link game score to threads somehow without human intervention.

Have you tried the Forum Runner App? I put pictures from my phone straight to BGP with that app.

It's a shame, there are some good athletes at these schools and they should get their "just do". Hell, this football season alone I started a thread about Bellevue's Tyler Ackerson. These schools "once" had strong parental involvement, unfortunately that is a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, I have also seen posters be critical of threads about certain stand out players from smaller schools; as if they don't deserve a thread because they would not be in the the starting 5 at another school.

So that kind of negativity has to stop.

I use to be one of those people in the small school threads all the time for Ludlow. Which I remember those threads usually got pretty heated, and ended up with the Guru usually suspending one of us because they use to really crack down on us haha. However I also was young and dumb back then with some of the comments I made, and even got into trouble with my own school because of it and wish I could take back. I still love the school I graduated from and want to see them do well. However I had decided that it was best to not post much if any in high school sports anymore for several reasons and haven't really posted much in several years.

 

I do believe someone kind of touched on this in a post. Back in the earlier years of this site, the rivalry's between small school like Ludlow, Dayton, Bellevue, etc seemed much greater. There was like true hate between the schools on and off the court. So when this site came around, when these people graduated they would join this site and still continue to back up their school. However the rivalry these days seems to be lost upon these kids, and just doesn't seem to mean as much. So even when new people join, there is not much interest or anything to spark conversation or even trash talk in the thread haha.

I love it. They have a free version and a 2.99 version. I bought it and love it. I use it for all my phone pics and my Kevin Ware and Chane Behanan memes.

I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet all the BGP members representing these schools you could count on your hands & toes, and you could probably leave one of your socks on.

You can find a lot of them down at the Bellevue Vets if you look. It is sad that I graduated from there almost 25 yrs ago and I know more about the team and post then their current fan base.

I could be wrong, but I get the idea that many or most of the BG Prepsters out here that take interest in high school sports are junkies of the whole big picture whether we're discussing games or players related to our own alma maters or not. It's just a big passionate hobby for a lot of us to follow, season after season, any or all of the teams and players, and especially the ones that are in the thick of things related to who's ultimately going to end up in the State and Regional Tournaments.

 

We enjoy the perpetual flow of knowing who upcoming stars or teams may be in the future, present season excitement, and even to follow players' careers as they enter into collegiate play. A lot of us get out to games to see in person the intense competition, or highly touted players we read about, and afterwards can't resist the urge to discuss what we've witnessed, and try our hands at being sports analysts, and to be informative in a sorta virtual reality meets reality kind of back and forth way to satisfy our undying interest in everything related to high school sports, as BGP is a nice icing on the cake, and has become a big player in the whole picture, and also allows us all to become players somehow in the whole big picture ourselves, as I'm sure many of us know what we know about with what's going on in high school sports mostly because of all the fine pertinent information that is shared here.

 

Some may follow more intently everything high school related, and some may pick and choose which particular sports interest them the most, and perhaps maybe even end up knowing and enjoying more about those sports related things they ordinarily wouldn't pay any attention to all merely just by being here for the purpose of checking out the sports that do interest them.

 

The general public's interest in high school sports typically sorta goes in waves, and picks up speed when they have a son, daughter, grandson, or granddaughter playing a sport. They'll start attending games, and if they're aware of this site, might check in to see what's being said about their family member, or to keep closer track of all things related to their family member's season. After graduation, and the peak of their interest passes, they drop back out from attending games or paying attention to what's going on, as their interest is not being fueled by anything in particular enough to keep them involved.

 

There's nothing wrong with that as it's just the nature of raising kids, that your interest will undoubtedly peak if your own children are involved.

 

I got interested at a very early age with the excitement of high school ball because I have a brother that is 10 years my senior who thankfully introduced to me the game, and was my coach the first few years of playing organized ball, as well as having neighbors who were just as much sports nuts as my brother was.

 

Long before I attended high school, I caught the fever of attending high school basketball games where year after year I absolutely loved following each season and keeping track of teams, players, mascots, cheers, bands, colors, uniforms, scores, statistics, records, brackets, tournaments etc etc etc...

 

It wasn't always like this for me. Much of my 20's, and part of my 30's I ventured away from the scene to do other things with my time only casually keeping up with things through the papers, and in many way bought into the myth that after high school it was sorta square to keep attending high school events as it kinda looked as if you were a geeky hanger on by doing so.

 

Then one treasured day in 1998 a coworker of mine stumbled upon the KHSAA website and showed it to me. I thought "Wow...every team in the state is listed with their schedules and results!!!???" I couldn't stop looking at it. Teams, players, mascots, colors, scores, statistics, records, brackets, tournaments etc etc etc... It all came flooding back to me in an instant. What have I been missing? Not only that, I had a way now to know who all the teams were in the state, what region they were in, where they were located. I never really ever had good knowledge of all of this while growing up as it seemed daunting and merely impossible to know this information. Now it was all right here at my finger tips.

 

While looking at the schedules I saw that Highlands were going to be playing at Holmes that evening. For the heck of it I attended. This was Jared Lorenzen and Derek Smith's 98/99 senior season. At the game the fever took hold of me just as it had when I was a kid, and I wondered why on earth did I ever walk away from this kind of excitement and pleasure, and at a minimal cost nonetheless? I was hooked, and now have been ever since.

 

As a kid I never had the pleasure of attending the Sweet 16. As an adult with wheels, and some money in my pocket I thought, "What the hell is stopping me now?" So I went and instantly loved the whole atmosphere that gave me complete goose bumps. There were many times I'd have big lumps in my throat watching teams run out on the floor at Rupp thinking to myself how exciting it must be for them. This was awesome. This was living! I attended 10 years straight with the last being the year Holmes brought the trophy back to the 9th Region, which hadn't happened since 1981 when Simon Kenton had won the one and only one that the 9th Region ever had in the long storied history of the Sweet 16. Since then I've chilled a bit from going, opting to stay at home and watch it online. That's all well and good, but there's nothing like being there. I know deep in my heart I'll be back. I Certainly need to get a good dose of that again in person. This year's looking like a good year to bring the goose bumps back.

 

Finding BGP years ago was a valuable discovery, and has been the driving force behind staying informed and staying interested. It, now along with all the other sites bringing us video and audio broadcasts, as well as the originator of information, KHSAA, we now have a fantastic package of interrelated sources that keep us in the know, and there's never a reason to miss out on all the action even if you have to travel away from the area temporarily, or permanently. We have something very special here. I know that it's not the only blog site in the world, but I don't know of others that serve so uniquely as it does.

 

Everyone drives it in a way that makes sense for them personally, from being interested in everything offered, to picking and choosing what interests them. Some are die-hard fans of their favorite team. Some are die-hard fans of the whole big picture or anywhere or everywhere in between.

 

I see Mustang's point with his hopes that every team can earn interest and notice. I really don't have an answer for that. I guess it's all sort of the nature of the game that the teams with die-hard fans will get their notice, and the teams and players who are shaking things up in the state will get theirs from all the folks who lean more towards keeping track of the teams and players who are shaking things up.

 

I tend to believe that most of us junkies here are in the latter category, so this year for example, I guess it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that if we had our choice to attend a Holmes/NewCath game on the same night of the likes of a Dayton/Bellvue game, it's pretty clear what game most of us will choose, and then as a result, also the one we're bound to talk about for days out here on BGP.

 

I guess that it is what it is, but I always enjoy reading what Mustang has to offer because he does fill the void for the small school, and I think that everyone out here is appreciative of his contribution. I know that I am. Whereas everyone has their chosen roll here, he's carved out his niche to provide us with interesting and informative information that helps drive this car, and in sensible, thought provoking, keep your eyes on the road fashion. His history, experience, and tidbits of sports info is irreplaceable, and a true value to the whole BGP experience.

 

Don't ever hesitate to lay on us the knowledge that you have to offer, and whatever info no matter what teams... Be for certain that we're all listening whether or not we're in the know enough to offer anything back. With you helping to keep us informed in certain, not always discussed areas, eventually we just might be able to.

 

I know one thing that I wasn't aware of before you posted it, and I am now glad the I do,is that Bellvue beat Dayton 59-45 in this year's installment of their big storied rivalry that goes back many many years.
