I didn't know there was such a thing as D3 high school teams in Kentucky. Learn something new every day

 

I knew they did something different, but I didn't know what exactly that was.

Augusta gets a ton of love on BGP. Aren't they a small school?

 

To my point though, the level of "love" they receive has ramped up dramatically since Bach got there and they've been very good. Just like when Corey Pelle was at Silver Grove they were a school that always would generate views and posts. People want to talk about, and in some cases chip away at, good teams.

Encourage the fans of those schools to join. We could always use more posters representing more schools. I definitely wish Louisville had better representation from among all the various schools in the Sixth and Seventh Regions. The big schools have more students and so more parents, more alumni, more fans.

 

^^^^^That's the bottomline, however if they have a "standout" player the average HS fan would take notice. If you really think about it, most of the NKY "small schools" (Bellevue, Dayton, Newport, Ludlow) probably have the fewest members.

Funny you should mention this Mustang. When I saw your score thread of the Bellvue/Dayton game, I too wondered how many folks cared about it as it spawned in me memories of what a big rivalry this game once was, and wondered if it still is, at least by the participating schools.

 

Heck, there used to be street fights (not encouraging a comeback of that) related to these games that made these two small docile towns appear to be tough and hardcore. Certainly it was a big deal generations ago with the students strutting their stuff, (while in reality it was a bit of a big fish in a small pond situation),... but nonetheless, strutting their stuff down Fairfield Ave. where only the brave would cross city lines alone sporting their spirit wear. Would love to see the posts made on BGP back in the 1970's when these games were played. Chances are many of the members then would've been suspended from posting since the arguments would've likely become a bit testy.

 

Last year I tried to draw some attention to the Covington Latin Trojans, where they in "once in a blue moon" fashion had a player, namely Mitchell Blewett, tearing up the record books while leading the state in scoring, becoming the highest scorer in Trojan history since David Justice with a career total of 1824 points. I noticed you and a few others took interest in that, but not many else did actually.

 

Since I'm on the topic, I might as well toss in a bit of current Trojan trivia to keep those who might care up to date.

 

Mitchell Blewett is currently attending NKU where he is majoring in Biochemistry. He is no longer playing organized basketball, but since he is two years younger than most college Freshman, I sorta wonder if there is possible game in his future when he matures a bit more. ???

 

Without his services and amazing scoring output due to graduation, after 3 games so far this season, the Trojans are presently averaging 14.6 points a game having scored 22, 11, & 11 in their 3 games respectively.

 

Bob Ganzmiller has taken over with first year coaching duties from long time head coach Gene Morrison who is presently serving in his 36th year at Latin, and is now Covington Latin's Athletic Director. Gene was the assistant coach to the late Fr. Ed Heile, and the head basketball coach, as well as the coach for additional team sports totaling 30+ years. Not sure of the exact amount of years, but you can figure somewhere between 30-35.

 

In researching Bob Ganzmiller I only discovered one of them mentioned, so if the information I found is truly related to THE Bob Ganzmiller, he was once a basketball, (and probably a baseball) player in 1955 for Western Hills of Cincinnati, a baseball player for Ohio State in 1960, and the head coach of Western Hills in the mid-to-late 60's. Did not find which year he graduated from Western Hills, but if it was 1955, that would make him perhaps something like 76 years old? Would love to know if a 76 year old man is truly resuscitating his coaching career, and if so, that there is pretty interesting stuff.

 

Personally I love small school topics, and never get tired of the excitement and romance of it especially when once in a while you have Hoosier like stories, or Mitchell Blewett type players that give Cinderella a chance of attending the dance.

 

Thanks for drawing attention to this Mustang. Maybe your thoughts will spawn a bigger interest in small school related stuff and we'll see more folks out here weighing in on them.

Elitist? Not at all. The posts go where the action is. Hey, NCC isn't a big school in the total scheme of things, and they get plenty of love on this site...because they are good. As someone mentioned above, Augusta. I bet $100.00 to a doughnut that most above average basketball fan would not be able to tell you where that school is, much less the average fan. But obviously they are making some noise and in turn getting talked about. There was a thread about Dawson Springs getting beat and only scoring 8 points. Some on here had never even heard of the school. I know where it is because I used to play softball in that area a lot and stay is the state park just down the road from there when in the area for work. I think it might have been the first post I remember seeing on here with them in it. But, if they had a team that was 6-0 and had beaten Hopkinsville and Madisonville, they would be getting all kinds of mentions I guarantee it, because they would be "moving the needle". Dayton and Bellevue, rightly or wrongly don't move the needle right now.

On a side note, we have noticed that the more content we (BGP) put out the more members appear to be to just sit back and read.

I don't think the southeastern part of the state where I live has anything like that. Just the districts and regions, and the All "A".

NewCath is a small school. It has nothing to do with size.

I agree that there are those who ride the wave when their team is hot, and then don't when their team is not. Beechwood, a few years back when they were winning NKAC Division III championships and even knocking off their big brother neighbors, always drew interest. Since then the only thing we have heard about the Tigers was when Michael Miller was let go.

 

I too remember now when we (Brossart) were D-III, walking into Barleycorn's and the NewCath and Highlands people asking us (as a courtesy) how we did. We would proudly state that we beat Bellevue that night, and they would congratulate us. Back then that was a big win for us, but I now realize that they didn't give a didly squat about our beating Bellevue, but were merely being polite.

My concern here is that the Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Silver Grove, Heritage, and Calvary Christians of the world don't post because they don't feel respected on here. Seeing the total apathy for a Bellevue-Dayton hoops showdown kind of confirmed it for me.

 

I don't have a solution, except for those of us who do maintain an interest in their happenings make note of them on here when applicable.

I get where you're coming from, but this is almost entirely user-generated content. In the threads for most games, it's fans of the two teams involved talking with each other. That means that the more fans are involved from each of the teams involved, the more discussion there is. There are very few other things directing people to threads about individual teams.

 

The people who can come on here and talk about Bellevue and Dayton are the fans of Bellevue and Dayton.

 

Zero responses to my thread this morning about Waggener moving to 5-0 by beating Jeffersontown. Why is that? It's because I don't know that there is a single fan of either Waggener or J-Town on these boards.

 

Talk about BGP whenever you can to people you know are dedicated supporters of the schools and their athletic departments. With rare exceptions, neutral fans aren't interested in games that don't involve either their team, their team's rival or a highly regarded player. Only greater interest from the fans of those schools involve can help drive content about them on the site.

Heck, I post my scores on here (Fox Creek Christian) and we aren't even a KHSAA affiliated team, and we may even be less talented than some of the small school teams you mentioned above (but I would like to find out). Most if not all of it depends on 1. the given team having fans on the site and 2. those fans posting. If there were 10 fans on this site who followed Dayton and they were frequent posters who wanted Dayton talked about, they could make it happen. Unfortunately I don't think that situation exist for them.

I could be wrong, but I'm willing to bet all the BGP members representing these schools you could count on your hands & toes, and you could probably leave one of your socks on.

 

It's a shame, there are some good athletes at these schools and they should get their "just do". Hell, this football season alone I started a thread about Bellevue's Tyler Ackerson. These schools "once" had strong parental involvement, unfortunately that is a thing of the past.

To my point however, there were 70 viewers interested enough to open the Bellevue-Dayton thread and read the content, BUT not a single reply.

 

And as many of you have said, there is no interest in the happenings of the small schools (especially in the 9th Region), therefore we have probably evolved into a "big program"//"big school" forum.

 

It doesn't make us bad people.
